DATABASE
TIPS & TRICKS
GETTING DATABASE USAGE STATISTICS
How often do you analyze usage statistics for your library's database
subscriptions? Getting into them can be daunting, especially if you do not have
accurate username/password information for your administrative account. Saving
those original messages that you get from the vendor when your subscription
starts is a good idea, as is recording account number and username/password
information in a central place offline. Designate a back-up in case the
responsibility for gathering statistics passes to someone else.
Here are basic instructions for getting usage statistics from some of the
database vendors that participate in the Nebraska Library Commission's discount
purchasing program. Instructions on accessing statistics for databases included
in the NebraskAccess statewide database program can be found at:
/nebraskaccess/statistics.aspx.
Note: when contacting vendors via e-mail, always make sure to include your
institution's name, the name of your consortium or distributor (Nebraska Library
Commission/NEBASE in this case), and complete contact information for yourself.

Frustrated by the lack of consistency in statistical reporting for
databases? You are not alone. Below are some resources and initiatives that
assist in or advocate for the creation and analysis of meaningful usage
statistics. Highly recommended: the ARL E-Metrics Project and the E-Metrics
Instructional System both have a good mix of philosophical and practical
information, and are probably the most useful links if your goal is to better
use and understand your statistical reports.
ARL E-Metrics Project
- Originator: Association of Research Libraries (ARL)
- What is it? An effort to explore the feasibility of defining and collecting
data on the use and value of electronic resources.
- More information:
http://www.arl.org/stats/newmeas/emetrics/
COUNTER (Counting Online Usage of Networked Electronic Resources)
- What is it? International initiative designed to serve librarians, publishers
and intermediaries by facilitating the recording and exchange of online usage
statistics.
- More information:
http://www.projectcounter.org/about.html.
E-Metrics Instructional System
- Originator: Information Use Management Policy Institute, School of Information Studies, Florida State University
- What is it?: Provides extensive tools and training to help practitioners know about their database use, digital reference services, and other selected services and resources.
- More information:
http://www.ii.fsu.edu/emis/index.cfm.
ICOLC Guidelines for Statistical Measures of usage of Web-based
Information Resources
- Originator: The International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC)
- What is it? The Guidelines specify a set of minimum requirements for usage
data, and also provide guidance on privacy, confidentiality, access, delivery
and report formats.
- More information:
http://www.library.yale.edu/consortia/2001webstats.htm.
NISO Standard Z39.7
- Originator: NISO (National Information Standards Organization)
- What is it? Details and defines significant library input and output
measures.

DATABASE TRIALS ON TAP FOR FALL 2005
The Nebraska Library Commission Network Services Department is in the process of
setting up fall trials of the following databases:
- FAITS (Faulkner Advisory for IT Studies) - a comprehensive, one-of-a-kind
online technology reports library that was created especially for use by the
academic community. Continually updated and fully searchable, FAITS contains
hundreds of reports designed to help students, educators, and administrators
learn about and keep up with the critical issues, trends, market conditions,
products, services, and vendors driving the information technology industry.
- PriceMiner.com - a new research tool for art, antiques, and collectibles,
containing data from eBay, GoAntiques and TIAS. PriceMiner.com can be used as a
price guide as well as an identification tool.
- Weiss Ratings - evaluates and rates the financial strength of more than 15,000
institutions, including banks & thrifts, HMOs, life & health insurers, property
& casualty insurers, long-term care insurance, and Medicare supplement
insurance. They also track the risk-adjusted performance of over 12,000 mutual
funds and more than 9,000 stocks.
- Campus Research - a new research service powered by Westlaw. Campus
Research promises to provide college and university students with an easy-to-use
online source for news, business and law-related information. News and business
content includes current and archival coverage of newspapers, magazines,
broadcast transcripts, wires and trade journals, with sources like The New
York Times, USA Today, Financial Times, Associated Press and
CNN. West will introduce Campus Research to interested Nebraska librarians via a
WebEx presentation in mid-September (exact date TBA). Trials will follow for
those wishing to explore Campus Research more thoroughly.

CATALOGING CLASSES GO ONLINE
Expanding on the experience with OCLC software classes online, we will now try
cataloging classes online. These online classes allow:
- people from a widespread area to attend without traveling,
- personal interaction,
- people who may need to miss one or two sessions from the longer running class
to still get CE credit by watching a recording of the session and completing
assignments.
For online classes, attendees must have Internet access and a telephone line to
call a toll-free number. Voice transmission over the Internet still needs some
work, especially for those with dial-up access only, so we need to talk over a
regular phone line. All the technical requirements for participating in the
online classes are available at
/netserv/cataloging.html.
Based on the evaluation of these two classes, we will make decisions on
repeating them and on adding classes on other topics.
Our first two offerings:
- Understanding MARC21 Bibliographic Records: The weekly sessions run from
September 13 to November 1. Each session lasts an hour and will focus on a
specific section of a MARC record.
- Dewey Decimal Classification: The weekly sessions run from November 30 to
December 14. Each session lasts an hour and a half.
These two classes are full. For more details on these classes or to be put on a
waiting list, see /netserv/cataloging.html.
Stay tuned. Who knows what's next-cameras and mikes on all the computers?
