OCLC PRODUCT OF THE
MONTH : WEBDEWEY
EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF DEWEY ON THE WEB
Now you can have web-based access to an enhanced version of the Dewey Decimal
Classification (DDC) database through WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey.
WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey, which correspond to the unabridged and abridged
print editions, are updated on a quarterly basis, bringing you ongoing updates
implemented by the Dewey editorial team almost as soon as they occur. The Web
versions also offer additional electronic functionality not available in the
print editions to make your classification work more efficient.
WebDewey has been based on the enhanced DDC 22 database since June 2003.
If your collection holds less than 20,000 titles, Abridged WebDewey is for you.
It gives you access to an enhanced version of the Abridged Dewey. Abridged
WebDewey is based on the new Abridged Edition 14.
WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey offer the following features:
- An easy-to-use, browser-based interface that allows you to search the DDC (and
related terminology) efficiently and navigate intuitively
- Thousands of Relative Index terms and built numbers not available in the print
version of the DDC
- Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) that have been intellectually
mapped to Dewey headings by DDC editors, including many from the Forest Press
publication Subject Headings for Children
- Links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records
- Quarterly updates, incorporating the latest changes to the Classification and
new LCSH mappings, index terms, and built numbers
- An annotation capability, which allows you to add your own notes into the
service to reflect local classification practices
Abridged WebDewey also includes mappings between abridged Dewey numbers and
subject headings from the latest edition of H.W. Wilson's Sears List of Subject
Headings
Both services contain the latest version of the schedules, tables, manual, and
relative index entries (print and electronic) from the respective enhanced DDC
databases. The hierarchical displays in WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey feature
updated main class and division captions (e.g., 700 Arts; 790 Sports, games and entertainment).

OCLC ONLINE COMPUTER LIBRARY CENTER AND YAHOO!
Agreement Provides the Ability to Search the Web and the Richest Database of
Items in Libraries with a Co-Branded Toolbar
OCLC and Yahoo! Inc. announced a pilot program that leverages the strength
of the Yahoo! Toolbar and Yahoo! Search to enable consumers to explore the Web
and WorldCat® (the OCLC Online Union Catalog) database. The program offers
consumers a co-branded toolbar that provides one-click access to two million of
the most popular records found in WorldCat, a central catalog of library
holdings created and maintained collectively by more than 9,000 libraries.
WorldCat includes books, movies and audio files.
The Yahoo!/OCLC toolbar is a project associated with Open WorldCat, a new OCLC
initiative designed to increase the online visibility of libraries and their
collections. OCLC will be promoting the co-branded toolbar on its website,
providing consumers access to information previously only available from within
libraries. The toolbar enables consumers to narrow their search results to the
WorldCat database and helps them locate libraries in their vicinity that have
the record they are looking for. OCLC and Yahoo! will work together to increase
accessibility to more of WorldCat's 57 million records as they become available.
"The Open WorldCat program has gained traction and support in the library
community because libraries recognize the need for greater visibility on the
Web," said Phyllis B. Spies, Vice President, OCLC Collection Management
Services. "The Yahoo! Toolbar with WorldCat searching will help us build on that
momentum by making it easy to search for WorldCat content using Yahoo! Search.
Working with a powerful partner such as Yahoo! will help us extend the reach of
libraries by bringing Web searchers to some of the most reliable and
authoritative information available on the Internet. And, we believe this will
bring more people into libraries."
"Having a direct relationship with OCLC enables Yahoo! to provide consumers with
content that would otherwise be difficult to access," said David Mandelbrot,
vice president, Yahoo! Search Content. "The co-branded toolbar serves as a
vehicle for delivering this content and empowers users with the ability to
seamlessly search for information that is available in offline databases."
How The Yahoo!/OCLC Toolbar Works
To access WorldCat's most popular records, consumers simply enter a query in the
search box located in the toolbar and either click the WorldCat logo or use the
drop-down menu which features a "libraries" link. Consumers will then be
prompted for their zip code to determine if the library materials they are
looking for are available in a nearby OCLC member library. The co-branded
toolbar features Yahoo! Search, which provides consumers with a rich research
technology to help them access both online and offline databases.
The Yahoo!/OCLC Toolbar also includes a drop-down menu, located next to the
WorldCat logo, which provides access to the OCLC FirstSearch service, the
NetLibrary eBook service, the OCLC member library list, the OCLC Web site and a
link to the About WorldCat site which leads to more information on the database.
The co-branded toolbar will also be available in OCLC libraries across the
nation.
The Yahoo!/OCLC Toolbar can be downloaded on Monday, November 15th from the OCLC
website: <http://www.oclc.org/toolbar>.

OPEN WORLDCAT PROGRAM UPDATE: OCTOBER 2004
OCLC's Open WorldCat pilot project was begun to increase the visibility of
libraries on the open Web.
OCLC has decided to turn the Open WorldCat pilot into a program that will be an
ongoing benefit for OCLC member libraries. The pilot has clearly demonstrated
the value of making WorldCat records and library holdings available to the
general public on the open Web. During the pilot phase, Open WorldCat brought
millions of click-throughs from Web search engines such as Google and Yahoo!
Search to the Open WorldCat interface, where users could find and link to
library catalogs and other resources. This is consistent with OCLC's chartered
objective of increasing the availability of library resources and the goal to
weave libraries into the Web.
In October, OCLC released an updated interface for the Open WorldCat Program.
Interface enhancements include:
- A library distance indicator
- An expandable view of holdings beyond local libraries (when available)
- A more intuitive display of IP-authenticated, library services links
- Book cover images, when available (for IP-authenticated users)
- An easier-to-use layout to help Web users find materials in library collections
OCLC plans to enhance Open WorldCat in the following ways by January 2005:
- Expand the set of libraries exposed through Open WorldCat to all libraries
with ownership information in the WorldCat database. This is scheduled to occur
on November 7. Libraries that do not wish to participate in the program may
request removal using the "Update your links" feedback form at <http://www.oclc.org/info/openworldcat>.
OCLC will continue to honor previous removal requests.
- Make all records with holdings in WorldCat available for harvesting by Google
and Yahoo! Search. Harvesting by partners will occur gradually over a period of
time.
- Release a usage statistics site for libraries. With these statistics, library
staff may monitor the number of times someone reaches their catalog, Web site or
various IP-based FirstSearch fulfillment links from the Open WorldCat interface.
A fact sheet with additional details about the Open WorldCat pilot and plans for
the ongoing Open WorldCat Program is available on the Open WorldCat Web site at
<http://www.oclc.org/info/openworldcat/>.

WORLDCAT RESOURCE SHARING ENHANCEMENT UPDATE
On October 10, WorldCat Resource Sharing was enhanced to provide all OCLC
resource sharing institutions access to the interface as well as more
robust processing options:
- All resource sharing users can now access WorldCat Resource Sharing.
Staff no longer have to link their Resource Sharing authorization to a
FirstSearch authorization prior to using the staff view. All valid
resource sharing authorizations now work in the staff view and in the
FirstSearch administrative module. Logon at: <http://firstsearch.oclc.org/>.
- Leverage your resource sharing and FirstSearch purchases with the
ability for staff to place requests in FirstSearch databases other than
WorldCat. You can link your resource sharing authorization to your
FirstSearch authorization in the FirstSearch administrative module
<http://firstsearch.oclc.org/admin>, and gain the ability to produce
requests in other databases and access full text. If you already linked
your authorizations to start using the service, you don't need to do
anything-access to additional databases is already available!
- Patron ability to cancel or renew requests. Your patrons can now cancel
and/or renew requests without staff intervention. Through the FirstSearch
administrative module staff determine whether or not their patrons can
cancel/renew requests.
- Streamline your workflow with links from requests to your local catalog.
Library staff can now link directly to their Web-based or Z39.50 local
system to obtain availability and call number information for an item in a
request. These settings are configured in the FirstSearch administrative
module; see the administrative module reference guide
<http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/firstsearch/managing/adminref>
for information on configuring the links.

OCLC ILL SUBSCRIPTION PRICING
Effective July 1, 2005 all OCLC resource sharing will be migrated to
subscription (unlimited) pricing. Transaction-based pricing will end June 30,
2005.
With subscription pricing, your monthly ILL costs are fixed, and your staff no
longer has to worry about the cost of every ILL transaction. A subscription for
OCLC ILL services can begin any month and will be renewable each year in the
same month you began your service. Your subscription will be automatically
renewed each year unless you let us know you wish to cancel at least 30 days
before the end of your subscription period. Multiyear contracts are available.
With ILL subscription pricing, your annual rate increases are tied to overall
price increases for the OCLC Interlibrary Loan service, not your library's
usage.
Libraries that are net lenders will continue to receive a credit on their OCLC
bill with their lending credit frozen at its current level once they move to
subscription ILL. Lending levels for net lenders will be reevaluated annually
and adjusted to reflect their current lending.
As well as providing predictable ILL costs, subscription pricing offers the
following advantages:
- ILL and cataloging telecommunications fees will be frozen at their current
rate. For example, if you use Flat Fee Internet and have a limited number of
cataloging and ILL simultaneous users, you will no longer experience turnaways
or incur overflow fees. Your telecommunications (Internet Access and Support)
fee will appear as a separate line item on your invoice.
- You can expand user access, enabling users to place requests through
FirstSearch or OpenURL services (e.g. ILLiad), without increasing your costs.
- Subscription pricing includes unlimited use of online Union List, ILL Fee
Management, and all ILL Management statistics at no additional charge. A list of
all product codes covered by the Subscription ILL Service is available at
<https://www3.oclc.org/app/rssub/productcodes.htm>.
OCLC generates quotes for new subscribers every six months, based on the
previous 12 months' ILL activity. New price quotes will be sent to NEBASE ILL
libraries in January, 2005.
If you have any questions, please email Christa Burns or phone 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665.

NEW PRICING FOR WORLDCAT RESOURCE
SHARING
On Sunday, October 10, OCLC changed the pricing for ILL transactions created in
the new WorldCat Resource Sharing service (formerly known as FirstSearch Staff
View).
The price when using the WorldCat Resource Sharing Staff View via the
FirstSearch interface is now a flat rate of $1.85 per request, with unlimited
searching and display of holdings built into that price. For libraries that have
previously been using the new ILL service, this represents an increase of $.46
per request. The new product code RSH6701, "WorldCat Resource Sharing Request",
will appear on your OCLC bill for all requests placed via WorldCat Resource
Sharing. This product code will replace ILL4507. An additional product code
(RSH6700) will appear for searches done in the new ILL service, but will be free
("zero-billed"). Lending credits and the IFM administration fee will also appear
on your bill, if applicable to your institution.
This new transaction pricing is a temporary measure that will be in effect
through June 30, 2005. Beginning July 1, 2005, subscription pricing will be the
only option for WorldCat Resource Sharing; transaction pricing for ILL will be
completely discontinued. NEBASE will communicate more details about subscription
pricing with you throughout this transition.
If you use Passport for ILL, ILL ME, ILL Web or ILLiad 6.x, you will not see any
changes to your billing for ILL requests created in those interfaces. Remember
that Passport for ILL, ILL ME, and ILL Web will be retired on May 1, 2005.
ILLiad 7.0 is scheduled for release in December 2004 and will use the new
transaction pricing model introduced in October until July 1, 2005 if a library
has not moved to subscription pricing.
If you have any questions, please email Christa Burns, or phone
402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665.

OCLC ILL POLICIES DIRECTORY: HELP YOUR
POLICIES SEND THE RIGHT SIGNALS
The OCLC Policies Directory is the Web-based source of lending and copying
policies of libraries participating in WorldCat Resource Sharing. These policies
are the key to the efficient day-to-day operation of the system-they let other
libraries quickly determine if and how an item you hold can be borrowed.
Inaccurate policies can "gum up the works"-time is lost to requests that are
directed to libraries that cannot fill them, causing delays.
In the near future, the Policies Directory will become the rules that drive
automated resource sharing request screening within the WorldCat Resource
Sharing staff view. This screening will take requests for items that cannot be
borrowed per your policy and move them transparently to another library. Your
library will only receive requests for items you own and lend, so your fill
rates as a lender will go up. The automated process means your staff will spend
less time reviewing requests, so your turnaround time as a borrower will go
down.
To maximize efficiency of this upcoming feature, and to accurately guide the
borrowing of materials in the existing process, your policies need to be present
in the Directory and accurate. To access the ILL Policies Directory go to <http://illpolicies.oclc.org>.
Log on using your ILL Authorization number and Password. Once you are in the
Policies Directory, click "My Units" at the top of the screen to view and edit
your own library's records.
NEBASE held an online training session for the Policies Directory which was
recorded and is available online for you to view at your leisure. To view the
Policies Directory session, go to the Online Sessions Archive web site at </netserv/training/onlinesessions/archives.html#policies>.
The recorded session is viewable from a web browser. You will need a sound card
and either earphones or speakers. There is no cost to view this recorded
session.
Instructions for entering your information into the ILL Policies Directory can
also be found in the reference card, Getting Started with the OCLC ILL
Policies Directory, which is available from the Directory web site at <http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/ill/libpolicies/getstart/>.
In addition, Technical Bulletin 248: OCLC ILL Policies Directory,
available at <http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/ill/tb/248/>,
provides detailed information about the OCLC ILL Policies Directory, including
instructions on using the Directory and screen shots.
For assistance with other changes to your Policies Directory record, please

CATEXPRESS EXPORT DEFAULT FILE NAME
OCLC made a change to the CatExpress export download default file name on
October 10, 2004 to correct a problem some users were having with getting the
correct file name into the Save As dialog. The default file name of "CExport"
has changed to "Export.dat".
CatExpress subscribers will always see "Export.dat" when the Save As dialog pops
up. You may change the file name to whatever you need to use and proceed with
your download.
All other cataloging users who use the Express tab in Connexion for export will
see whatever is currently set as the Export File Name in Export Options in
Preferences. It could be the system default of "Export.dat" or a name that you
have entered yourself. Here again, you may change the file name in the Save As
dialog and continue with your download.
This change only affects the default file name for export file download in
CatExpress. Nothing else about the export process in CatExpress has changed.

OCLC CONNEXION BROWSER EXPORT
ENHANCEMENTS
OCLC installed the following export enhancements in the Connexion Browser
on Sunday October 10:
Export and Label File Aging
Aging of downloaded Connexion browser export files began on October 11.
All downloaded export files created 30 days or earlier before October 11
were removed from export file lists. Aging includes all downloaded export
files whether or not they are hidden. Files that have not been downloaded
will not be aged off of the export download lists. The file aging process
will run every night beginning October 11.
Label files will follow the same pattern with the exception of a 7 day
holding period instead of 30.
Authorization Numbers in File Download lists
Authorization numbers now remain in the file download lists after the
files are downloaded. This will help with identifying downloaded export
and label files.
Default File Names
Connexion now sends an error message when you use special characters or
the entire path in setting up the default file name for export and label
files, but it doesn't block you from saving with the errors. If you save a
file name containing special characters, you will not be able to retrieve
your export and label files. In that case, you must change your default
file name in Export Options or Cataloging Options in order to retrieve
your download files.

OCLC CONNEXION CLIENT MACROS
Do you use macros? Are you migrating to Connexion client?
Here is some information that might help you with moving macros to
Connexion client.
Passport users - On May 4, OCLC
hosted a macro session with presenters Harvey Hahn, Arlington Heights
Memorial Library, and Joel Hahn, Niles Public Library District. The "Your
Passport to Connexion" session included valuable information about the
differences between macros in Passport and Connexion. OCLC has recently
added a transcript of the session to the Connexion client macro site at <http://www.oclc.org/connexion/support/macros.htm>.
CatME users - We expect to hold a
similar session in February 2005, focusing on moving macros from CatME to
Connexion client. Watch for more information about that session early next
year.
All users - Be sure to check out
the "OCLC Macro Language for Complete Beginner" lessons available on the
client macro site. These 12 easy lessons to macros were written by Joel
Hahn.
And, see the client documentation topics on macros, which are available
from the Connexion client documentation page under "Basics" at <http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/connexion/client/default.htm>.

OCLC UNION LIST SERVICE MIGRATION
UPDATE
OCLC will provide the functionality to maintain local holdings (LDRs) in
the Connexion browser in June 2005, when OCLC will retire Passport for
Union Listing. OCLC has chosen the Connexion browser as the first
interface for this functionality as it supports a broad range of users
maintaining their local holdings manually. The availability and timing for
other interfaces beyond June 2005 is still under discussion. Libraries
will still also be able to use OCLC's batchload service, Local Data Record
Update (LDRUS), to maintain local holdings in WorldCat.
These local holdings will continue to display in FirstSearch databases and
OCLC Resource Sharing as well as being added to the Connexion browser.
OCLC will continue to release more details about the Union List service
migration over the next few months.
