NetLibrary IV Shared Collection Order Deadline
Extended
Due to popular demand, the deadline for participation in the
NEBASE/SOLINET NetLibrary Shared Collection IV has been extended.
The new deadline is Wednesday, November 24th!
OCLC ILL Subscription Pricing
Effective July 1, 2005 all OCLC resource sharing will be migrated to
subscription (unlimited) pricing. Transaction-based pricing will end June 30,
2005.

NEBASE ANNUAL MEETING 2004
This year's NEBASE Annual Meeting offered a lot to think about regarding the
future of libraries with George Needham's keynote presentation on OCLC's
Environmental Scan. Through his presentation, "Gamers, Google and the Gathering
Place: the Library Environment Today" George explored five areas of the library
landscape, Social, Economic, Technology, Research and Learning and Libraries.

The second half of the morning was set for a presentation of the Nebraska
Library Commission's Nebraska Memories program. The Nebraska Memories program is
a plan for a Nebraska digital library for historical materials using the
CONTENTdm software. This program focused on the how-tos for libraries interested
in participating in the project. For more information on Nebraska Memories

The afternoon offered two tracts for participants to choose; one for Technical
Services and Resource Sharing and the other for Digitization. Christa Burns,
OCLC Members Services Coordinator for NEBASE, presented overviews of the new
OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing interface as well as news regarding replacement
times and dates for Passport coming in May 2005. Christa also presented a
session on the new Connexion client and the migration schedule for the
replacement of Passport as a cataloging interface for OCLC users.
Paul Cappuzzello of OCLC presented two sessions on CONTENTdm software. Paul's
first session focused on CONTENTdm and examples of current digitization projects
using the software. Paul's second session focused on how to use the software and
create your own digital collection for the web.
Plans are already underway for next year's NEBASE Annual Meeting. Currently we
are thinking about a summer date. Let us know what you think about that time of
year and any topics you would like to see included on the agenda.

GETTING YOUR HISTORICAL COLLECTION ON
THE WEB WITH NEBRASKA MEMORIES
Interested in having your library's historical collections available over the
web? Take a look at the information available on the Nebraska Library
Commission's Nebraska Memories web page to find out how you can participate in
this statewide digitization effort. The web site provides information on what
materials are acceptable for the project, how to apply for LSTA funding,
information on CONTENTdm software, and more.
The Nebraska Memories project will provide access to historically and culturally
significant digital collections created by Nebraska libraries, either alone or
in partnership with other Nebraska institutions such as museums and historical
societies. The Nebraska Memories project is being built using OCLC's CONTENTdm
software. CONTENTdm allows institutions to import, organize, manage, store,
search and share digital objects. It can handle any digital media type,
including scanned photographs, digital image files and digital audio and video
files.
Participants in the project are asked to have attended or attend a future
training session on Digitization and Scanning offered by the Nebraska Library
Commission. Room is still available in the upcoming December 1 and 2 sessions to
be held in Lincoln. You can find more information on the workshops on the

WANTED: THE BEST SMALL OR RURAL LIBRARY IN AMERICA
Library Journal is seeking nominations for their new annual Award
for the Best Small or Rural Library in America. This award is cosponsored
by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and has been founded to encourage
and showcase the exemplary work of small and rural libraries. The award
honors the library that most profoundly demonstrates outstanding service
to populations of 25,000 or less. Members of the editorial board of
Library Journal, librarians from around the country, and a
representative from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will judge
nominations based on key factors, including:
- Creativity in developing services and programs that can be replicated by
other libraries
- Innovation in introducing and supporting public access computing,
educating patrons in its use, and measuring the impact of this technology
usage
- Use of technology to expand the reach of library services
- Demonstrated community support
- Success in developing cooperation with other libraries and partnerships
with other agencies and businesses
- Significant increase in library use, particularly by new users
- Evidence of library's role as community center
The first winning library will receive a $10,000 cash award, a feature
story in the February 1, 2005 Library Journal, membership and conference
costs for two library representatives to attend the Public Library
Association Biannual Conference in 2006, and a gala reception at the
conference.

NEBRASKACCESS LINK CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Congratulations to the following libraries!
Hartington Public Library & Lyons-Decatur Northeast Schools
They are the winners of our NebraskAccess Link Contest.
These two libraries will receive a free, personalized training session on
NebraskAccess database resources for an audience of their choice. Hartington
Public Library will be hosting a training session for teachers in their area in
one of the local schools computer labs. Training will cover the databases used
in the local schools.
Entries to the contest were accepted from public and school libraries with a
link from their web site to NebraskAccess or directly to the database resources
provided by the Nebraska Library Commission.
Please remember to create a link to these valuable resources from your library
and media center web sites. Your communities and schools can only use the
resources if you inform them about their ability to access the information.

FIRSTSEARCH ADMINISTRATIVE MODULE BASICS ONLINE
SESSION
Need an introduction to the FirstSearch Administrative Module and want to do it
from the convenience of your own desk at work or home? Then register for this
one-hour online training session--FirstSearch Administrative Module Basics-to
be held on Wednesday, December 8, from 3:00-4:00 PM CST.
These online sessions are provided at no cost to you and allow you to view a
live presentation from your own computer via the web. Audio will be available
via a toll-free telephone conference call. You may ask any questions you have
during the session.
DESCRIPTION: This class is designed to introduce Nebraska librarians to some of
the basic FirstSearch settings they can customize using their FirstSearch
Administrative Module. It will be geared toward librarians who have rarely or
never ventured into their FirstSearch Administrative Modules, although all are
welcome to attend. Topics to be covered include:
- Accessing and navigating the FS Administrative Module.
- Changing your FS Service Password and your FS Administrative Module Password.
- Setting up or changing IP-Address Recognition.
- Turning database access ON/OFF.
- Changing your FS Session Timeout period.
- Linking to Online Booksellers and Document Delivery Services.
- Linking to your Library Web Catalog.
- Linking to NetLibrary.
- Changing your default search screen (e.g. from Basic to Advanced).
- Changing or overriding the default library holdings display (e.g. give patrons/staff the option of seeing ALL holding libraries)
- Creating a Custom Library Group
This FirstSearch Administrative Module Basics training session will be conducted
by Susan Knisely, Online Services Librarian, Nebraska Library Commission.
Participants will receive 1 hour of CE credit. There is no cost to participate
in the session, but registration is required.

NETLIBRARY IV SHARED COLLECTION ORDER DEADLINE
EXTENDED
Due to popular demand, the deadline for participation in the
NEBASE/SOLINET NetLibrary Shared Collection IV has been extended.
The new deadline is Wednesday, November 24th!
In another piece of good news, SOLINET has indicated that with
$550,000 in committed funding to date, and 238 participating
libraries, we will reach our initial goal of purchasing 5,000-6,000
titles for this collection. However, with the extended deadline the
collection could exceed 6,000 titles.

AP MULTIMEDIA ARCHIVE TRIAL
Nebraska libraries are being offered free trial access through December 31
to The Associated Press Multimedia Archive, which spans multiple disciplines and
offers students a non-biased, and reputable source to use for their research,
assignments, projects, reports and presentations.
School and home use of this database includes:
- Associated Press Photos with Captioned Text - Over 1 million photos and
growing! From the early 1800's up to a few minutes ago, with around the world
coverage as the event occurs!

NEBRASKA MEMORIES METADATA GUIDELINES
The last Catalog This! column mentioned that Dublin Core is used as the
basis for metadata records in CONTENTdm and that CONTENTdm would be used in the
Nebraska Library Commission's digital project. Information has been posted since
then about the Nebraska Memories project </nebraskamemories>.
Part of the Nebraska Memories documentation includes metadata guidelines </nebraskamemories/metadata.pdf>
for records to be created in CONTENTdm by our participants. These guidelines
are based on the Western States Dublin Core Metadata Element Set developed as
part of the Western Trails digitization project.
Our guidelines define the fields, specify which fields will be mandatory, and
offer some options. Record templates may be customized depending on the
particular project. The guidelines do rely on library standards for consistency.
For instance, AACR2 formatting and capitalization rules are followed. Controlled
vocabulary files will be created for name and subject headings.

please review these guidelines.
