NEW MEMBERS COUNCIL DELEGATE
At the end of March we announced the election results for our new delegate to
the
OCLC Members Council. Mary Johns, Assistant Director of Lincoln City Libraries,
was elected as our NEBASE delegate and Michael LaCroix, past NEBASE delegate,
was named our Alternate Delegate to Members Council.
Since that time Mary Johns has left Lincoln City Libraries to
pursue another library opportunity. Normally, our Alternate Delegate would
assume this role, but since Michael had just completed two three-year terms on
the Council he felt that it would be better to ask another from our election
ballot.
Beth McNeil, Associate Director of University Libraries at the
University of Nebraska-Lincoln, was our runner-up in the early spring
election. Beth has graciously accepted the late appointment to follow Mary Johns
as the NEBASE delegate to OCLC Members Council. Michael LaCroix will remain as
our Alternate Delegate to fill in if Beth is ever unavailable to attend one of
the nine Members Council meetings that are on the calendar for her three-year
term. We welcome Beth as our new delegate and as an ex-officio member of the
NEBASE Advisory Council.

NEBRASKA LIBRARY COMMISSION TRAINING
PORTAL STREAMLINES ACCESS TO COMMISSION-SPONSORED TRAINING EVENTS
Have you ever riffled through your email inbox, looking for a
previously-read-but-not-acted-upon Nebraska Library Commission training
announcement so you can click on the direct link to the registration form?
Have you struggled to find details about a scheduled training session on the
Nebraska Library Commission Web site, either by browsing departmental Web pages
or using the site search?
If so, you will undoubtedly appreciate the new Nebraska Library Commission
Training portal introduced in May. This database-driven service brings
information about all Commission-sponsored training together in one convenient
location. Rather than visiting various departmental Web pages to find training
opportunities offered by that department, you can now use this "one-stop-shop"
to find and register for all Commission-sponsored training.
The new Commission Training portal allows users to find training opportunities
in a variety of ways. Users can:
- Perform a keyword search (e.g., OCLC, Basic Skills, Cataloging)
- Browse training by date or class title
- View by location
- View by month or day using the calendar
The training portal encompasses all training sponsored by the Nebraska Library
Commission such as Database Roadshows, NEBASE/OCLC training, Basic Skills, Gates
workshops, and more. It includes in-person training as well as live and archived
online training.
Visit the Nebraska Library Commission web site
and
click on the "Commission Training" link on the left-hand side of the page to try
it out.

H. W. WILSON ENHANCEMENTS
In June H.W. Wilson made a number of enhancements to the Wilson database
interface. These changes affected both Magazines - Wilson (OmniFile Full Text
Select)
-
and Biographies - Wilson (Biographies Plus Illustrated)
-
which are
available to Nebraskan's as part of NebraskAccess. Below are a few key changes
that have been made. The announcement from H.W. Wilson about these changes can
be found at:
http://www.hwwilson.com/Documentation/WilsonWeb/enhancements/
wweb_maintenance.htm.
The first change you will notice on the search result screen is a list of
subjects located above the search results. The system generates a list of
subject headings based on the subjects that were returned in your search result
list. Click on any of the subject headings to perform a search for that subject.
The subject headings are a great way to help refine and focus your search.
The other change on the search result screen is the new full text links. The
icons are now clearly labeled and appear below the citation on the Brief Display
page and within the citation on the Full Display page. Clicking on either of
these links will open a new window displaying the full text. All articles are
available in the Full Text format, however only selected journals are available
in PDF format.
Another great enhancement is the addition of the Print, Email, and Save buttons
to the Full Text HTML view. When a user clicks on the Full Text HTML link on the
search results page a second window will open displaying the full text of the
article. The new buttons are located at the top of this window allowing users to
instantly print, email or save the full text of the article without a lot of
extra clicks.
Users may also notice the addition of two new buttons in the left toolbar. The
two buttons are Create Alerts and Exporting/Citing. These new buttons provide
easy access to these functions. Create Alerts allows users to save a search
within the database then have the system automatically run the search daily,
weekly, or monthly and email them the results. Exporting/Citing allows users to
export records into RefWorks or EndNote software.

MORE CHANGES AT THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
Despite the hue and cry from many librarians, the Library of Congress (LC) went
ahead with its decision to discontinue Series Authority work as of June 1 and
now it seems other cataloging standards may be on the chopping block.
What is Going on at the Library of Congress? by Thomas Mann highlights
other changes that are occurring or may occur in the near future which affect
cataloging or access to materials. This paper is available at
http://guild2910.org/AFSCMEWhatIsGoingOn.pdf. One possible change mentioned
by Mann is discontinuation of the Library of Congress Subject Headings.
Rumor also has it that LC might discontinue the Cataloging in Publication (CIP)
program. While this might not affect OCLC members so much as popular items will
be cataloged fairly quickly, there are many little public and school libraries
that will be hurt by such a move.
We will update you as LC decisions regarding cataloging issues become final.
