CALVIN T. RYAN LIBRARY'S UNK CATALOGING/SYSTEMS/SERIALS
DEPARTMENT OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH
The Calvin T. Ryan Library's Cataloging/Systems/Serials Department is the
Univerisity of Nebraska at Kearney's Department of the Month for March. Whenever a member of the
UNK community or the public picks up a book, magazine,
newspaper, microfiche, VHS, DVD or CD; uses the reference section of the
library; or searches for data on ROSI, it is the Cataloging/Systems/Serials
Department that made it available.
The department maintains the library online catalog (ROSI); assigns locations of
books on shelves in the library; determines call numbers, subject headings and
processes to access the books and other materials; updates the Web page; and
ensures that magazines, newspapers and journals are shelved appropriately.
Each year the department catalogs approximately 12,000 books. In so doing, the
department draws upon the resources of the Online Computer Library Center
(OCLC). The Calvin T. Ryan Library has been a member of this extensive
international network of libraries for 30 years--long before the World Wide Web
and most other computer networks were available. Today, Calvin T. Ryan Library
is one of more than 50,584 libraries in 84 countries and territories throughout
the world served by OCLC. Further, the Cataloging/Systems/Serials Department
members have contributed to, and drawn on, OCLC's WorldCat, which now contains
more than 47 million catalog records contributed by more than 9,000 member
libraries. The OCLC is a major resource for the department as its members draw
upon its resources to serve the UNK academic community.
Members of the department include: Sharon Mason, professor and department head;
Jeanne Schultz and Julie Stall, Library Assistant III; Glenda Wilson, Computer
Software Technician II; and Rosemarie Wilson, LaVonne Fries and Cynthia
Messenger, all Library Assistant II rank.
As the nomination noted, while members of the Cataloging/Systems/Serials
Department may not be very visible to the general library users, the results of
their efforts are very visible to the public and UNK community.

ONLINE DIGITIZATION COURSE AVAILABLE
THROUGH WEBJUNCTION
If you're interested in learning more about digitization, consider taking
WebJunction's Developing Digital Projects online course.
Description: WebJunction's Developing Digital Projects was created in
collaboration with OCLC's Digital Collection Services unit. The course covers
the basics of preparing for a digital project including staffing, budgeting,
planning the project, outsourcing, and the difference between digital projects,
digital programs, and digital libraries. This course emphasizes the importance
of the planning process for your project and the benefits of connecting the
project to your organization's goals. Learners will understand the importance of
early planning for the project. By the end of the course, learners will be able
to identify a vision for their digital project; recall the way collaboration,
architecture, and governance affect each other when structuring a digital
project; identify their project's goals, objectives, and audience; create a
digitization selection policy that is specific to their project; list five
leading principles; recall the relationship between resolution and image
clarity; calculate file sizes for different image resolutions; recall some
hardware and software options as they relate to the needs and requirements of
digitization projects; determine their metadata needs to help people find and
access their digital objects; weigh the factors in deciding whether or not to
outsource all or portions of their digitization project; gather the necessary
information for properly budgeting and staffing a project; and recall the
similarities and differences between digital projects, digital programs, and
digital libraries. The estimated amount of time needed to complete this course
is two hours.
Cost: This course costs $50.
Requirements: You must be a registered member of WebJunction to enroll in

ISSN: CHANGES IN THE FUTURE
In the March/April issue of
N3, we reminded you about the
upcoming switchover to a 13-digit ISBN. And in the January/February issue, we
reviewed FRBR implications for works, expressions, manifestations, and items.
With all these changes in the works it is not surprising that the assignment of
the ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) is in the process of being
revised.
Although the number of digits in an ISSN is not being increased like the ISBN,
the International Standards Organization (ISO) working group has taken FRBR
issues into consideration. To collocate manifestations of the same title, their
solution is to assign a "tissn" or Title ISSN in addition to the ISSNs assigned
for each new medium that the title is produced in. So a search using a tissn
should retrieve all versions-print, electronic, etc.
Details are still being hammered out by the working group. Decisions made at
their February meeting can be found at
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/iso/tc46sc9/wg5/wg5n28.pdf. Other documents
related to the changes may be found from the working group's home page
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/iso/tc46sc9/wg5.htm. The working group will
meet again in Paris on April 25 and 26.
