OCLC MEMBERS COUNCIL ON THE FUTURE OF LIBRARIES Under the direction of President Charles Kratz (PALINET), more than 175 delegates, alternates, Board members, network and service center directors, guests, and OCLC staff participated in the recent OCLC Members Council meeting on May 15-17 in Dublin, Ohio.
The theme for this meeting was "Future Patterns of the Library Landscape: Moving Libraries Beyond Their Comfort Zones" and focused on the future of libraries worldwide, strategic objectives, OCLC membership, and projects of the Office of Research.
OCLC Members Council discussed efforts to extend the cooperative worldwide, provide services that will help libraries thrive in a Web culture, and ensure that delegates continue to focus on global initiatives in the coming years by electing, for the first time, council leadership from outside the United States.
Presentation slides, webcasts, and minutes of various meetings are available on the OCLC Members Council website at http://www.oclc.org/memberscouncil/meetings/2005/default.htm

FIRSTSEARCH ADMIN MODULE TIP: HOW TO SKIP
THE FIRSTSEARCH "HOME" PAGE
When institutions purchase more than one database on FirstSearch, their users
are brought to the FirstSearch Home page to select a database to search. This is
fine for users that are unfamiliar with the FirstSearch databases; but for users
who already know which FirstSearch database they want to search, the FirstSearch
Home page can be more of a hindrance than a help.
Now it is possible to bring users directly to the search screen of a specific
FirstSearch database. To do this, an institution needs to set a default database
in FirstSearch. This is done by using the FirstSearch Administrative Module and
Following the steps below:
- Access the FirstSearch Admin Module Web Site at
http://firstsearch.oclc.org/admin.
- Login with your institution's FirstSearch authorization and Admin Module
password.
- Click the Authentication/Access tab.
- In the Default Database column, select the database you want your users to go to
immediately after accessing FirstSearch.
- Click Save Changes.
- Click Exit.
Note: Although institutions can set up direct links to individual FirstSearch
databases on their web pages, IP-access to FirstSearch and HTML-coding of web
links is required.

OPEN WORLDCAT-ENABLED WEB TOOLS
The Open WorldCat Web site now includes information about tools that can help you more conveniently search for library materials from your PC desktop. The three tools featured on this page are:
- Yahoo! Toolbar. This special edition on the Yahoo! Toolbar provides always-there access to Open WorldCat records via Yahoo! Search, plus the full complement of Yahoo! services.
- Google Toolbar with Autolink feature. The newest version of Google Toolbar enables always-there access to Open WorldCat records through its Autolink feature. Autolink detects the presence of specific kinds of information on the current Web page and-by pressing the Autolink button on the Toolbar-links to related or lookup information for that item.
- Firefox search extensions. Add WorldCat searching to the Search Bar of the popular open-source Web browser Firefox. From an ever-present browser pane, you can enter your search terms and select the search engine to be queried.

CHECK YOUR OCLC ILL POLICIES
Attention OCLC ILL Libraries!
The OCLC ILL Policies Directory is the Web-based source of lending and copying
policies of libraries participating in WorldCat Resource Sharing. These policies
are the key to the efficient day-to-day operation of the system-they let other
libraries quickly determine if and how an item you hold can be borrowed.
Inaccurate or blank policies can "gum up the works" - time is lost when requests
are directed to libraries that cannot fill them, causing delays.
To maximize efficiency of the OCLC ILL process, your policies need to be present
and accurate in the Directory. To access the ILL Policies Directory go to
http://illpolicies.oclc.org. Log
on using your ILL Authorization number and Password. Once you are in the
Policies Directory, click My Units at the top of the screen to view and
edit your own library's records.
NEBASE held an online training session for the Policies Directory which
was recorded and is available online for you to view at your leisure. To view
the Policies Directory session, go to the Online Sessions Archive web site at
/netserv/training/onlinesessions/archives.html#policies
The recorded session is viewable from a web browser. You will need a sound card
and either earphones or speakers. There is no cost to view this recorded
session.
Instructions for entering your information into the ILL Policies Directory can
also be found in the reference card, Getting Started with the OCLC ILL
Policies Directory, which is available from the Directory web site at
http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/ill/libpolicies/getstart/.
The OCLC ILL Policies Directory Quick Start Tutorial shows what
information you'll need to know in advance and guides you through the ILL
Policies Directory interface. You can view the PDF at
http://www.oclc.org/ill/migration/quickstart_policies.pdf.
In addition, Technical Bulletin 248: OCLC ILL Policies Directory,
available at
http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/ill/tb/248/, provides detailed
information about the OCLC ILL Policies Directory, including instructions on
using the Directory and screen shots.
For assistance with changes to your ILL Policies Directory record, please

OCLC WORLDCAT RESOURCE SHARING
SEARCHING CHANGE
A few libraries have contacted NEBASE asking about a search that no longer seems
to work in the OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing system.
You used to be able to put '?' as a search key to get a list of ALL your
active OCLC requests. This functionality still exists, but the way you run the
search has changed.
OCLC changed the searching in the OCLC WorldCat Resource Sharing system the
weekend of June 11.
Searching is now done as an exact match, which means only something that the
system can match up will retrieve any results. The '?' search doesn't
match up exactly with anything, so it doesn't work anymore.
BUT, this does not mean that you can't still get the results that you need! You
just have to do it differently. Instead of putting in a '?', enter your
own library's OCLC symbol in the search box. And when you choose Borrowing
Library or Lending Library, the way it searches has switched, like so:
To retrieve all requests with your library as the borrower:
(This replaces the ? - Lending Library search: instead of asking "who has
loaned to me?" you now ask "who have I borrowed from?")
- Enter your OCLC symbol in the search box
- Choose "Borrowing Library" from the drop-down list
- Click the Search button
To retrieve all requests with your library as the lender:
(This replaces the ? - Borrowing Library search: instead of asking "who have I
loaned to?" you now ask "who has borrowed from me?")
- Enter your OCLC symbol in the search box
- Choose "Lending Library" from the drop-down box
- Click the Search button

CATEXPRESS ENHANCEMENTS
The June Connexion enhancement installation, completed this past weekend, has
several changes for CatExpress users:
- Diacritics now display correctly in all views.
- Results sets are now returned in main entry order, rather than by the number
of holdings.
- The 50-field limit has been removed. Users can now add their holdings to
records with more than 50 fields with no problems.
- The title search on the Brief search screen has been replaced with the Title
Phrase search. Both Title Keyword and Title Phrase are available on the Advanced
search screen.
- Index choices on the Advanced search screen have been updated to remove
obsolete indexes, and to include the index label in the display.
If you have questions about CatExpress or the Express tab, please email Christa Burns or phone 800-307-2665 or 402-471-3107.

CATEXPRESS LIBRARIES - CHECK
YOUR MONTHLY TRANSACTION REPORTS
Are you wondering how many titles you have left in your CatExpress
subscription? Do you need accurate statistics on your cataloging activity?
The OCLC CatExpress Monthly Transaction Reports have what you need.
Every month OCLC mounts Monthly Transaction Reports detailing your
library's CatExpress cataloging activity on the Product Services Web. The
Reports list transactions for the Current Month's activity and
Year to Date activity. Year to Date activity is for the current
subscription year - July 1, 2005-June 30, 2006. Reports remain available
for 90 days. There is no extra cost to access the Reports. They are
included as part of your CatExpress subscription.
Why do you need to know how much of your CatExpress subscription you
have used?
Libraries who exceed their subscription limit may be charged $.875 for
each record over the limit. If you monitor your usage and don't go over
your subscription limit, you can avoid having to pay any extra charges at
the end of the subscription year.
For detailed information about the Monthly Transaction Reports and
instructions on how to use them, see the NEBASE CatExpress web site at
/netserv/nebase/catxreports.html.

CONNEXION CLIENT 1.40 RELEASE
MOVED TO JULY
Connexion client 1.40 release has been moved from June to July.
June was a very busy month for many of us, including libraries completing
their migration, and support staff at OCLC regional service providers and
in OCLC Customer Support helping staff with migration issues. Moving the
client release from June to early July helped us to complete migration
before introducing the client, so that support staff will be available to
help with upgrades if needed.
For more information about the upcoming changes to client 1.40, please see
http://www.oclc.org/connexion/interface/client/enhancements/future.htm.
The following updates have been made on this page recently:
Client 1.40 will now include:
- updates to text string functionality; the cursor is now left at the end
of the text, even if your text crosses cells.
- a new "align-right" option for cataloging with the Arabic (and Hebrew)
script.
- a Chinese (Simplified) interface (previously Chinese (Traditional) and
Japanese interfaces were announced).
The following enhancements were previously announced as "July-September",
but they are now updated to "July":
- Hebrew, Cyrillic, and Greek script cataloging.
- Access to the HKCAN (Hong Kong Chinese Authority Names) database.
Watch for more information about the client release in the coming weeks.

USING PASSPORT FOR UNION LISTING/LOCAL
HOLDINGS MAINTENANCE
This message is for those users who have both Cataloging and Union Listing
capabilities on their authorizations. As of June 4, Passport no longer allows
Cataloging authorizations to log on.
You have two options to continue with Union Listing:
1. When prompted to enter your autho, type the number, a comma and "uls" for the
system. For example: 000-000-000,uls
OR
2. Set up a new Passport session, specific to Union List. Click Session, Create,
and let the Session Guide take it from there. Make sure to choose "PRISM Union
List" from the list of options. You don't need to enter the "uls" for the
authorization. The system will handle it automatically.
There is no need to change your authorization numbers.
Passport for Union Listing/Local Holdings maintenance will continue until local
holdings maintenance functionality is available in the Connexion browser later
this year. When we have established the date for that change, we will announce
it. For ongoing information about the migration, please see
http://www.oclc.org/migration/.
If you have further questions, please contact NEBASE, 402-471-3107, 800-307-2665
