OCLC TO HOLD PRICES AT CURRENT LEVELS THROUGH JUNE 2004
In recognition of the current economic realities facing libraries during the
continued downturn in the global economy, OCLC will hold prices at current
levels next year, implement a number of business restructuring actions to
control and reduce operating costs, and continue to invest in the future for
libraries.
"In this difficult time, the OCLC cooperative can not only offer hope, but
practical solutions that can help libraries, museums and archives increase their
productivity and do more with less," said Jay Jordan, President and Chief
Executive Officer, OCLC. "Indeed, our objective of reducing the rate of rise of
library costs is more important than ever. It is also critical that we continue
to invest in products and services that will help libraries serve their users at
levels they have come to expect."
During the 2003/2004 fiscal year, beginning July 1, 2003 and ending June 30,
2004, there will be no price increases in OCLC cataloging and metadata services,
cooperative discovery services, and digital and preservation services. For OCLC
services that provide access to third-party content, OCLC will pass through to
libraries any royalty increases that are charged by content owners. OCLC
provides third-party content in the FirstSearch service, Electronic Collections
Online database and netLibrary eBooks.
OCLC continues to invest in the future of libraries. OCLC is enhancing WorldCat
(the OCLC Online Union Catalog) to provide libraries with new functionality and
efficiencies to help them control their costs. OCLC has also recently launched
new products and services-such as the QuestionPoint virtual reference service,
Digital Archiving, CONTENTdm digitization software, and netLibrary eBooks-that
will help libraries meet the challenges of the digital age.
"Cooperation, collaboration and resource sharing-the core values of the OCLC
cooperative-can help libraries rise to the challenge of these demanding economic
times," said Mr. Jordan. "We fully intend to continue to make OCLC membership
the best value in the worldwide library community."

OCLC PRICING 2003/2004 AVAILABLE ON
NEBASE WEB PAGE
The OCLC Products and Services Price List for the 2003/2004 Fiscal Year is now
available on the NEBASE Web page at </netserv/nebase/nebserv.html>.
These prices, in effect from July 1, 2003 through June 30, 2004, apply only to
NEBASE members. OCLC has not changed the pricing for the 2003/2004 fiscal year,
so the pricing remains at the current 2002/2003 levels.
If you have any questions, problems, or concerns related to these prices, please
feel free to email Christa Burns, NEBASE OCLC Member Services Coordinator,
or phone 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665.

OCLC PRODUCT OF THE MONTH : DIGITAL AND PRESERVATION RESOURCES
CUSTOM SOLUTIONS THAT LET YOU PROTECT AND SHARE YOUR VALUABLE COLLECTIONS
There are many reasons libraries, museums and historical
societies digitize some, or all, of their treasures. Digital preservation
provides security. It extends longevity. And it simplifies management. But most
importantly, it gives users better access to your most precious collections.
OCLC has been involved in collection preservation for more than 20 years. OCLC
Digital and Preservation Resources' mission is to:
OCLC CATEXPRESS OFFER: 13 MONTHS FOR
THE PRICE OF 12
NEBASE is offering a free trial month of OCLC CatExpress access to new
subscribers. CatExpress provides Web-based copy cataloging to small libraries at
a low, flat-fee subscription price.
If you are cataloging 3,000 or fewer titles a year, CatExpress is the most
efficient way to get your holdings into OCLC. A CatExpress subscription includes
the cost of searching the WorldCat database, setting or deleting your holdings
in WorldCat, receiving MARC records to load into your local system, and your
telecommunications charges to OCLC.
The OCLC CatExpress trial subscription is a no-risk way to see if CatExpress is
right for you and your library. Many libraries new to OCLC would like to know
what kind of hit rate they will receive with CatExpress. You may also want to
know how the records from OCLC can be processed by your local system. The trial
option allows you to do real work with CatExpress, before committing to a
subscription.
The introductory subscription is for the month of June 2003, and is free. If you
do not wish to continue with CatExpress, simply cancel before the end of June.
If you do not cancel within that first month, the subscription automatically
rolls over to the regular 12 month subscription, which runs from July 2003-June
2004.
NEBASE will be taking orders for CatExpress through May 15. The free trial month
will begin on June 1, 2003. If you decide to continue with CatExpress after the
free trial month is over, you don't need to do a thing. You will automatically
be added to NEBASE's CatExpress Group Subscription. You will only pay for the
regular 12 month subscription, receiving 13 months of CatExpress access for the
price of 12.
To learn more about CatExpress, and to see the special NEBASE Group Subscription
Pricing, go to </netserv/nebase/catx.html>.
Email Christa Burns or phone 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665 if you have any questions and to sign up for the
CatExpress offer.

OCLC FIRSTSEARCH SERVICE ENHANCEMENTS
This article includes information for library staff in reference, interlibrary
loan, collection development and systems.
Please contact NEBASE 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665 or OCLC User and Network
Support 800-848-5800 or <support@oclc.org> with questions about these
enhancements to the OCLC FirstSearch service.
MARCH 2003 ENHANCEMENTS
FIRSTSEARCH CONTENT
23 Journals Added to OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online
23 new journals from 5 publishers were added to OCLC FirstSearch
Electronic Collections Online, bringing the online total to 4,459 journals
available. The new titles and their ISSNs are available at <http://www2.oclc.org/oclc/fseco/index.asp>.
New Database: Media Review Digest
The Media Review Digest database is now available on the OCLC
FirstSearch service. Media Review Digest provides extensive review coverage of
educational media, along with strong supplemental coverage of entertainment
resources from 1989 to the present, to help librarians make the most of their
acquisitions budgets. In addition to providing citations to reviews of media
resources in several leading print publications, the Media Review Digest
database also contains links to over 300,000 full-text reviews and related
resources accessible on the Internet. It includes more than 100,000 media
resources with over 375,000 reviews, evaluations, awards and prizes. The
database covers media forms such as educational and feature films,
videocassettes, videodiscs, educational and spoken-word records, tapes and
compact discs, CD-ROMs, DVDs, and other optical media, and slides,
transparencies, kits, maps, anatomical models, games, and other miscellaneous
media items. The Media Review Digest database is available via per-search and by
subscription; contact your regional service provider for further information.
Coverage Of ATLA Religion Database Expanded!
The ATLA Religion database on FirstSearch has been enhanced with the
addition of over 50,000 new indexing records from the Retrospective Indexing
Project (RIP) 1843-1948, Andover Review (1884-1893), and the Methodist Reviews
Index (MRI) 1818-1985. Taken together, these additional records provide
substantial retrospective coverage of over one hundred journal titles in the
ATLA Religion database. Three new product codes, RIP, MRI and Andover, have been
added to the Product Code Limit on the advanced and expert screens in the ATLA
Religion database on FirstSearch to help users identify these new groups of
records.
PsycARTICLES Database Enhanced With PDF Images
Users of the PsycARTICLES database on FirstSearch now have the option to
view PDF images of the full-text articles in the database, in addition to the
HTML versions.
FIRSTSEARCH FUNCTIONALITY
Union List Data Visible from Serials Records in Additional FirstSearch
Databases
Holdings information as recorded in Local Data Records (LDRs) in the
OCLC Union List service is now accessible from serials records on the initial
holdings screen and on the Display All Libraries screen in all ISSN-based
FirstSearch databases. This information saves users' time and makes it easier
for them to locate articles in the collections of their own and others'
libraries because they can check the volumes and years owned in the holdings
display. The visibility of local holdings data protects and leverages the
investments already made by libraries in their serials collections, in union
listing, and in their consortia. It enhances libraries' stature with funding
authorities and user communities by increasing awareness of, and broadening
access to, their collections.
Link to Holdings Display from Brief Records in Additional FirstSearch
Databases
Users will be able to click on links labeled "Libraries" in brief records in
ISSN-based FirstSearch databases to go directly to lists of owning libraries.
These links streamline the process of viewing the holdings information, since
users no longer have to go first to the Detailed Record, and have been
implemented in response to user suggestions.
APRIL 2003 ENHANCEMENTS
FIRSTSEARCH FUNCTIONALITY AND INTERFACE
Records Exportable to RefWorks, ProCite, Reference Manager Bibliographic
Management Software
In response to many requests, FirstSearch users can now export one or more
bibliographic records directly into RefWorks <http://www.RefWorks.com/productinfo.shtml>
bibliographic management
software, in addition to the previously available EndNote package <http://www.endnote.com>.
If they do not have access to EndNote or RefWorks, they will be able to export
data as delimited text files for use in other popular programs such as ISI
Researchsoft's ProCite <http://www.procite.com/>
and Reference Manager <http://www.refman.com/>.
The link to RefWorks appears on the Direct Export Records page in FirstSearch,
accessed by clicking the button at the top of the brief and detailed record
screens. To export to ProCite and Reference Manager, users should choose Text
file.
NOTE: OCLC does not distribute or provide support for the bibliographic
management programs. Please see <http://www.refman.com/rmcontact.asp>
for support contact information.
Interface Changes Make It Easier for Users to Get the Items They Need
Several changes to the FirstSearch brief and detailed record displays
will make it easier for users to get the items they need. A new "Get This Item"
link and icon appear in brief records where there is no full-text link and where
appropriate, depending on the nature of the database. The link and icon appear
only in databases in which ILL and holdings are available. Clicking Get This
Item takes a user to a new section, also labeled "Get This Item", at the top of
the detailed record. This section includes one or more of the following: the
link to the display of libraries worldwide that own the item; the link to a
library's web-based catalog if it has been enabled in the administrative module;
a new link to OCLC Interlibrary Loan (in addition to the ILL button still
available in the gray bar); and links to external resources the library has set
up, e.g., to JSTOR or the library's OpenURL server. The text of the ILL link is
customizable in the FirstSearch administrative module (see below). To make it
easier for users to understand, the label of the "Ownership" section of the
record has been changed to "Availability".
Biology Digest Enhancements
Users of the Biology Digest database can now take advantage of the same
level of functionality as they can in other FirstSearch databases. They can

OCLC ILL CUSTOM HOLDINGS ENHANCEMENTS
Two custom holdings enhancements were added to OCLC Interlibrary Loan in April:
OCLC ILL POLICIES DIRECTORY NEWS
The ILL Policies Directory was released on February 16 and has to date been used
by 700 libraries to create over 1600 policies. The Directory continues to grow
larger every day as OCLC moves towards migration away from the NAD for ILL
policies.
In times like these, Interlibrary Loan goes up...way up. The new OCLC ILL
Library Policies and Technology Directory can save you and your OCLC partners
precious time processing ILL requests. So take a little time now to update your
entry in the new Policies Directory. You can notify potential borrowers of items
you cannot lend, enter your library's OPAC and more.
Detailed instructions for entering your information into the new ILL Policies
Directory can be found in a new reference card, Getting Started with the ILL
Library Policies and Technology Directory, which is available from the ILL
Policies and Technology Directory Web site at <http://www.oclc.org/oclc/ill/illpolicies.htm>.
You may have also received a copy of this card in the mail.
In addition, Technical Bulletin 248: OCLC ILL Policies Directory,
available at <http://www.oclc.org/technicalbulletins/248/>,
provides detailed information about the OCLC ILL Policies Directory, including
instructions on using the Directory and screen shots.
To find your Policies Directory entry, log on to the OCLC ILL Web interface at <http://illweb.oclc.org>
and click on the Policies Directory link at the top of the screen. Note: This
will launch a new browser window; close the ILL Web interface window in order to
make any changes to your record without incurring Access & User Support Fees.
If you do not use the ILL Web Interface or ILLiad (version 6.2 or higher) as
your OCLC ILL interface of choice, you have the option to access the Directory
at <http://illpolicies.oclc.org>.
Access and User Support Fees will not accrue in any ILL Policies Directory
session no matter which interface you choose to enter from.
Once you are in the Policies Directory, click My Units at the top of the
screen to view and edit your own library's records. You cannot change some
fields, such as your library's name. They must be changed by OCLC via a
no-charge Profile Change Request. To request this change, send a letter or
e-mail containing the details to NEBASE. Changes usually take up to 4-6 weeks
for completion in the OCLC system, and to be reflected in the ILL Policies
Directory.
For assistance with changes to your Policies Directory record, please contact Christa Burns (email)
or phone 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665 or OCLC User & Network Support at 800-848-5800 or <support@oclc.org>.
REMEMBER: Later this year, in August or September, OCLC will no longer
support ILL policies in the NAD. We encourage you to enter your library's
information into the ILL Policies Directory during the next four months. Name
Address Directory information will not be transferred to the new service. The
Policies Directory will replace the NAD for ILL only. ILL policies will be
removed from NAD in 3rd Quarter 2003. The Policies Directory is NOT accessible
from Passport.

OCLC ILL POLICIES DIRECTORY TECHNICAL BULLETIN AVAILABLE
To assist your ILL operation in migrating from the Name Address Directory to the
ILL Policies Directory, Technical Bulletin 248 is now available at <http://www.oclc.org/technicalbulletins/248/>
in both PDF and HTML formats.
Technical Bulletin 248: OCLC ILL Policies Directory provides detailed
information about the OCLC ILL Policies Directory, which was released in
February. The Policies Directory is the central location for users to access
institutional data required for ILL activities. This database includes ILL
policies, contacts and system information for any OCLC ILL participating
institutions. The Policies Directory will eventually replace the Name-Address
Directory (NAD) for ILL activities.
Reminder: As previously announced, OCLC is no longer sending out printed
copies of Technical Bulletins.

OCLC CONNEXION: WINDOWS CLIENT INTERFACE FOR
CATALOGING: RELEASE DATE AND NEBASE WORKSHOPS
The OCLC Connexion Windows Client interface is scheduled for release in
June 2003. However, the exact date of the release has not been decided
yet. The actual release date is dependent upon how live testing of the
Interface goes. OCLC will announce the actual release date sometime in
May.
So that we are prepared to train users as soon as possible after the
release date, NEBASE has scheduled workshops on the Windows Client
interface during June. However, these workshops will only be held if the
Windows Client interface has actually been released. For example, if the
Windows Client interface is released on June 15, then the June 11 workshop
will be canceled, but the June 19 and June 24 workshops will be held as
scheduled.
If testing goes smoothly, the interface could be released in early June.
So, please feel free to register for any of the scheduled Windows Client
interface workshops. As soon as the release date is decided, NEBASE will
make an announcement. We will also contact anyone who has registered for a
class scheduled for before the release date. We will let you know that the
workshop has been canceled and that you can choose another workshop to
attend.
Information about the OCLC Connexion Windows Client interface can be found
at <http://www.oclc.org/connexion/features/client/>.
To see the NEBASE OCLC Workshops schedule, go to </netserv/nebase/oclcworkshops.html>.

OCLC CONNEXION MONTHLY MAINTENANCE INSTALLATIONS
OCLC completes monthly maintenance and quarterly enhancement installs for
OCLC Connexion. Monthly installs generally include minor enhancements that
do not affect documentation or training, as well as some problem fixes.
Monthly installs in March, June, September, and December coincide with
quarterly updates to the WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey databases.
MARCH INSTALLATION
The OCLC Connexion March maintenance installation was successful.
Access Method Indication on Logon Screen
With this install, the access method you use to logon is now indicated in
text below the logon button. Additionally, Access Methods is a new entry
in the Related Links area. The Access Methods link provides a list of all
the valid Connexion URLs for the various access methods, making it easy to
switch if the incorrect URL was initially used to logon.
Metadata Creator in Dublin Core
Metadata Creator, introduced in February, is now a hotlink to a new topic
in Connexion Help.
Preferences/Cataloging
The option to set display or edit after an update has been restored. To do
this, go to the General tab, Admin, Preferences, Cataloging Options, and
at the Bibliographic Record Mode after Update option, select either
Display Mode or Edit Mode.
Print Record Command for Cataloging and Authorities
Print record, a new print command for Cataloging and Authorities, will
allow you to print a complete record from any view. The command is
available from the action drop-down list and by using the function key
F12. This new print command is in addition to the capability you already
have to print from the browser, i.e., File/Print.
The new print command is easy to use. After you choose to print the record
from Connexion by clicking on the print record command or pressing F12,
the record is formatted for printing and transmitted to the browser. When
the Print dialog box appears, click Print or Enter.
The printed record, resulting from the new print command, resembles the
display view of the record and contains the record header, record
identification area, status area and record content. Text boxes, drop-down
lists, navigation buttons, jump bars and other interface elements will not
print. Blank call number fields and other field prompts without data will
print. The complete text in long fields will print, even if it not fully
visible in the displayed record. Underscores indicating a hotlink on a
URL, controlled heading or DDC number will also print.
The printed record will either contain a gray and white background,
similar to what you see in the displayed view of the record, or an all
white background. How it prints depends on whether you have background
colors turned on or off. If you use IE or Netscape 7.x, you have the
option to turn the background colors on or off. The record may print a bit
faster if the background colors are turned off.
If you have popup blocking software turned on, the new print record
command will not work unless you configure the software to allow popup
windows from the domain oclc.org. But, if you experience problems with
this function or other Connexion functions after configuring oclc.org as
an exception, contact the vendor of your popup blocker for information on
known problems that might affect its operation.
See the new Connexion Help topic, Print bibliographic or authority record,
for more details.
S/L Label in Serials 006
The S/L label, which was inadvertently removed from the 006 field for
serials in February, has been restored to the display.
WebDewey/Abridged WebDewey Quarterly Update
WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey are updated quarterly. Both services
contain the latest version of the schedules, tables, Manual, and Relative
Index entries (print and electronic) from their respective enhanced DDC
databases. The hierarchical displays in WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey
feature updated main class and division captions (e.g., 700 Arts &
recreation; 790 Sports, games & entertainment).
This April 2003 release of WebDewey includes:
SETUP WORKSHEET FOR CONNEXION BROWSER AVAILABLE
To help you migrate from OCLC Passport or OCLC CatME to the browser
interface of Connexion, OCLC has developed a Setup Worksheet. It contains
a list of basic settings to check, select, or enter before you use the
Connexion browser for cataloging. Required settings are noted.
The worksheet is available in the Getting Started section from the OCLC
Connexion documentation page at <http://www2.oclc.org/connexion/documentation/>.

UPDATE YOUR SERIALS HOLDINGS DATA IN WORLDCAT FOR FREE
WITH OCLC LOCAL DATA RECORD UPDATING
OCLC Local Data Record Updating enables libraries to maintain serials
holdings information in OCLC's WorldCat through batch processing.
Libraries wishing to update their local data records can do so through
OCLC Local Data Record Updating at no charge through June 30, 2003 for
data compliant with the MARC 21 Format for Holdings Data. Data submitted
in non-MARC formats can be updated for a fee.
What are LDRs?
Local Data Records (LDRs) describe your library's copy-specific holdings
data. They are attached to a serial's bibliographic record in WorldCat.
They allow you to let patrons know not just that you own a particular
serial title, but specifically what years and volumes you hold. LDR
information is part of the OCLC Union List Service.
Why should I update my LDRs?
OCLC has added LDR information to both the ILL Service and FirstSearch
with recent enhancements to both systems. These enhancements give greater
visibility to your libraries' local data records. For example, users of
WorldCat on FirstSearch can now see LDR holdings information for their own
institution, as well as for other institutions.
For detailed information on these enhancements and instructions on how to
update your library's serials holdings data in WorldCat using LDR
Updating, go to </netserv/archives/n32003mab.html#oclc>.

OCLC TECHNICAL BULLETIN SERIES, PRINTED EDITION, DISCONTINUED
To reduce printing and shipping costs, effective immediately, OCLC is
discontinuing the distribution of printed copies of technical bulletins.
Technical bulletins will continue to be available on the OCLC Web site in PDF
and HTML formats. A list of current technical bulletins and links to them is
available at <http://www.oclc.org/technicalbulletins/>.
We will also continue to announce the availability of new technical bulletins
via the following listservs: OCLC-Cat, DOCUpdate-l, and Techbul-l. To subscribe
to any of these lists, use the OCLC Internet List Subscription Request form at <http://www.oclc.org/oclc/forms/listserv.htm>.
Technical bulletins announce changes to OCLC services, such as changes in MARC
bibliographic formats and enhancements to the OCLC Interlibrary Loan service.
Technical bulletins are issued in advance of system changes, and the information
in the bulletins is later added to user guides.
By containing costs here at OCLC, we are keeping the cost to you under control
while still providing the same quality of service.
