The focus of the 2002/2003 Members Council is two-fold: "Libraries, Their
Present and Future Global Environment: National, Regional, Local," and "OCLC
Strategic Plans and Measurements for Success." Both are required for Members
Council to better understand and contribute to the future development of OCLC as
a viable partner for libraries in the 21st century. And both are designed to
facilitate Members Council in its role of assisting the OCLC Board of Trustees
and management in the continued development of OCLC as a worldwide, world-class,
library cooperative.

OCLC FIRSTSEARCH SERVICE ENHANCEMENTS
This article includes information for library staff in reference, interlibrary
loan, collection development and systems.
Please contact NEBASE at 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665, or OCLC User and Network
Support at 800-848-5800 or <support@oclc.org>
with questions about these enhancements to the OCLC FirstSearch service.
NOVEMBER 2002 ENHANCEMENTS
WORLDCAT
Index counts in More Like This Advanced Options
When users click the "Advanced Options" link in the "More Like This"
field in the Brief or Detailed Record display, they can now choose to see counts
of items displayed after the terms listed under each index. If a user clicks on
the "Show counts" hotlink next to the Search and Clear button at the bottom of
the Advanced Options screen, the counts will appear. The index counts will help
searchers determine if refining their original search by choosing and combining
terms is likely to result in a manageably sized set. For example, if there is
only 1 record in the WorldCat database for a term, combining it with any other
index is unlikely to expand the results. Choosing to combine other terms that
have more occurrences in the database will be a more effective means of
expanding the search.
FIRSTSEARCH CONTENT
New OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online Journals
Thirty-five new journals from four publishers, including 25 titles from
new publisher Urban and Fischer, have been added to OCLC FirstSearch Electronic
Collections Online, bringing the online total to 4,311 journals available. The
new titles and their ISSNs are available at <http://www2.oclc.org/oclc/fseco/index.asp>.
Diacritics Now Display in MLA International Bibliography Database
With its recent reload, the MLA International Bibliography database on
FirstSearch switched to the Latin-one character set, meaning that proper
diacritics now appear in non-English language records. At least sixty
non-English languages, including French, Spanish, German, Russian, Portuguese,
Norwegian, and Swedish, are represented in the materials indexed in the
database; the presence of diacritics enhances the truly international character
of the database.
DECEMBER 2002 ENHANCEMENTS
WORLDCAT
Spellchecker
A major cause of search failure in WorldCat comes from typos or
misspellings in search terms. This new feature offers search suggestions after a
search that results in zero or a low number of records, similar to what users
see in Amazon.com or Google. The suggested term(s) come from WorldCat indexes,
increasing the likelihood that the user will get results. For zero-hit searches,
when a term within the search is identified as having zero postings or low
postings (e.g., fewer than 5 postings) in a keyword, author, or title index,
words that are "close" will be suggested as possible replacements. If
non-keyword indexes were specified in the original search, the indexes specified
will be maintained for the suggestions. When the user accepts the suggestion and
clicks the Search button, it counts as a new search. The spellchecker will
increase the likelihood of successful and relevant results, saving users time
and effort.
ArticleFirst Tables of Contents Browseable from WorldCat Serial Records
Users of WorldCat on FirstSearch who also have access to OCLC
ArticleFirst are now able to click on a record for a serial title in WorldCat
and browse detailed contents information for the corresponding title in the
ArticleFirst database. Libraries that have access to journals in Electronic
Collections Online, or have turned on access to any of the other sources of
linked full text in FirstSearch databases (ABI/INFORM, Periodical Abstracts,
PsycARTICLES, Wilson Select, and Wilson Select Plus) will see links to the full
text in these journals or databases from the ArticleFirst records they can now
access through WorldCat.
Subtype Limiters (Audience, Content, and Format) Now Available for Refining
Search Results
Drop-down limit options for subtypes available within the Material Type
index are now available on search results screens, giving users another way to
refine their results. These post-search subtype limiters help users identify
materials in the exact formats and content types that they can use.
If a user does not limit a search to a subtype before running it, subtype
limiters will appear on the results screen. The subtype limits shown depend on
the document types in the results, and the values for the limits are customized
for each document type:

OCLC ILL "LENDER LDR" ENHANCEMENT
The "Lender Local Data Record (LDR)" enhancement was installed on Sunday,
November 10. This enhancement adds the lender's LDR information from the OCLC
Union List service to all "Pending" requests in ILL Web, Passport, ILLME, and
ILLiad. The addition of local holdings information to the lender screen allows
lending libraries to quickly and efficiently identify requests that can be
immediately declined. This enhancement supports quicker processing of new
lending requests and improves turn-around time.
How it works in ILL:
OCLC ILL NON-SUPPLIER STATUS
OCLC ILL Non-Supplier Status is convenient for staff vacations, academic breaks,
or a leave of absence.
As an ILL supplier, your library's OCLC symbol appears in upper-case in the OCLC
ILL Service. When other libraries locate an item in OCLC that you own, they may
create an ILL request and use your symbol in their lender string.
At some time, you may need to change your institution's ILL lending status. If
your library is closed for a long scheduled holiday or you are going on vacation
or you must be closed for at least a week due to unforeseen circumstances such
as inadequate staffing or a natural disaster, you can change your status from
supplier to non-supplier for a temporary time. As a non-supplier, your library's
OCLC symbol appears in lower-case and other libraries may not use your symbol to
request materials from you.
Remember, the supplier status of your symbol is verified only at the time the
borrower builds the lender string. If your symbol had already been included in
the borrower's request before your symbol was switched to lower case, you might
receive requests in your Message File. Given this, you may want to start being a
non-supplier before the actual date your ILL staff will not be available. This
will give you time to clear out any requests that are still in process.
The change to non-supplier status can be made any day of the week. You should
allow at least a couple of days for processing by NEBASE and OCLC.
If you would like to switch to non-supplier status for a temporary time, please
e-mail Christa Burns or contact NEBASE at 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665. Tell us your beginning date
of non-supplier status and when you wish to go back to supplier status.

OCLC ILL WEB INTERFACE: USING CUSTOM HOLDINGS
OCLC ILL Custom Holdings is a time-saving feature of OCLC's Interlibrary
Loan system. When you list libraries you prefer to borrow from in Custom
Holdings, the system can do the checking for you to determine if an item
is held by one of those libraries.
Instructions on how to set up your ILL Custom Holdings using the OCLC ILL
Web Interface have been added to the NEBASE web site: </netserv/nebase/customholdings.html>
Please feel free to contact NEBASE at 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665 if you
have any questions.

OCLC CATEXPRESS OFFER FOR NEW SUBSCRIBERS: 13 MONTHS FOR THE
PRICE OF 12
NEBASE is offering a free trial month of OCLC CatExpress access to new
subscribers. CatExpress provides web-based copy cataloging to small libraries at
a low, flat-fee subscription price.
The OCLC CatExpress trial subscription is a no-risk way to see if CatExpress is
right for you and your library. Many libraries new to OCLC would like to know
what kind of hit rate they will receive with CatExpress. You may also want to
know how the records from OCLC can be processed by your local system. The trial
option allows you to do real work with CatExpress, before committing to a
subscription.
The introductory subscription is for the month of June 2003, and is free. If you
do not wish to continue with CatExpress, simply cancel before the end of the
month. If you do not cancel within that first month, the subscription
automatically rolls over to the regular 12 month subscription, which runs from
July 2003-June 2004.
NEBASE will be taking orders for CatExpress from now through May 15. The free
trial month will begin on June 1, 2003. If you decide to continue with
CatExpress after the free trial month is over, you don't need to do a thing. You
will automatically be added to NEBASE's CatExpress Group Subscription. You will
only pay for the regular 12 month subscription, receiving 13 months of
CatExpress access for the price of 12.
To learn more about CatExpress, and to see the special NEBASE Group Subscription
Pricing, go to </netserv/nebase/catx.html>.
Email Christa Burns or phone 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665 if you have any questions and to sign up for the
CatExpress offer.

OCLC CATEXPRESS USER GUIDE, 4TH EDITION, NOW AVAILABLE
The fourth edition of the OCLC Cataloging Express Service User Guide is
now available on the OCLC web site in Word, PDF, and HTML formats. The fourth
edition adds coverage of label printing and record export features. All earlier
editions are obsolete.
The fourth edition is available online at <http://www.oclc.org/oclc/cataloging/catexpress/guide/>.
OCLC encourages users to consult electronic documentation whenever possible. For
most services and in most cases, OCLC continues to provide one no-charge copy of
printed documentation to users of the service. If the online versions of the
CatExpress User Guide, 4th ed., do not meet your needs and you need to order
a printed copy, go to the OCLC Documentation web site for User Guides at <http://www2.oclc.org/documentation/default.asp?Type=MAN>.

END OF SUPPORT FOR PASSPORT FOR CATALOGING
On June 30, 2002, OCLC Connexion was introduced as the new OCLC cataloging
platform. Over the past 6 months, OCLC has introduced many enhancements, and
more are on the way. In mid-2003, the Windows client to OCLC Connexion will be
introduced. Take a moment and visit <http://www.oclc.org/connexion/>
to see all of the benefits and enhancements that Connexion has to offer.
OCLC would like to remind users that Passport for cataloging will no longer be
supported after December 31, 2002. This means that there will no longer be any
enhancements or patches developed for Passport for cataloging purposes. If you
have questions specifically related to Passport for cataloging, OCLC User &
Network Support staff may ask you to consider migrating to OCLC Connexion or to
OCLC CatME. However, this does not mean that Passport will cease to work.
Passport will continue to operate with the OCLC Cataloging service until
December 31, 2003. OCLC will continue to support and answer questions about
cataloging functionality (searching, editing, etc.) with Passport until the end
of 2003.
IMPORTANT: This announcement does not affect Passport users of Interlibrary
Loan, Union List, and the Name Address Directory services. These services will
continue to operate with Passport until replacement systems are implemented.
We hope that you have already taken a look at Connexion at <http://connexion.oclc.org>.
If not, please logon with your current cataloging authorization and password and
begin planning your migration.

OCLC-MARC FORMAT UPDATE 2002
The OCLC-MARC format changes announced in Technical Bulletin 247, OCLC-MARC
Format Update 2002 became effective December 1, 2002. In addition to the
bibliographic format changes and the newly defined codes, users should follow
the new practices for coding field 041 (Language Code) and for cataloging
integrating resources that are outlined in TB 247. Here are a few highlights of
the 2002 Update. Please see Technical Bulletin 247 at <http://www.oclc.org/technicalbulletins/247/>
for additional details.
DVD code "v" for 007 subfield e
A new code "v" specifically for DVD format videorecordings has been defined for
the Videorecording 007 field subfield e. The existing value "g" has been
redefined more narrowly and should no longer be used for DVDs.
Form code "s" for Sound Recordings
Form of Item code "s" (electronic) is now valid for the Sound Recordings fixed
field (REC 008/23) and the Sound Recordings 006/06.
Field 041 Coding
Every subfield in the Language Code field 041 is now repeatable. OCLC users
should discontinue the practice of placing multiple language codes in one
subfield and begin using the single code per repeatable subfield practice.
Integrating Resources
According to AACR2, 2002 revision, an integrating resource is "a
bibliographic resource that is added to or changed by means of updates that do
not remain discrete and are integrated into the whole. Integrating resources can
be finite or continuing. Examples of integrating resources include updating
loose-leafs and updating Web sites."
Starting December 1, 2002 and continuing until the future full implementation of
Bibliographic Level code "i", please follow these guidelines for integrating
resources:

CHANGE IN ENTRY OF DIACRITICS IN CONNEXION PLANNED FOR
FEBRUARY 2003
Beginning February 16, 2003 OCLC Connexion browser users will enter diacritics
following the character they modify instead of preceding the character. This
change will conform to Unicode standards and bring OCLC's handling of diacritics
more in line with worldwide practice.
You will continue to have the option to enter diacritics using bar syntax, copy
and paste, or a Unicode-enabled keyboard as you do now. Display of bar syntax
when in edit view will be optional. You will be able to select the option to
display bar syntax under Admin Options in Connexion.
If you access Connexion via Internet Explorer, you will be able to enter
diacritics by selecting the characters from a pop-up dialog box. This will be
very similar to the character selection box currently used in Passport and
CatME.
Important points to remember:
OCLC CONNEXION BROWSER: AN OCLC TUTORIAL
- REVISED
Using OCLC Connexion Browser: An OCLC Tutorial, revised to
incorporate November 2002 enhancements, is now available! All modules have

will be revised following the constant data enhancements planned for
February 2003.
The tutorial can be accessed via the OCLC web site at: <http://www.oclc.org/connexion/support/training/>
and from the Related Links section of the OCLC Connexion logon screen.
This tutorial provides both an introduction to Connexion and a
workflow-oriented approach to searching and cataloging. Within the
tutorial, you can print review pages and use them later for online
practice or as job-aids. The tutorial is suitable for existing and new
OCLC cataloging users as well as cataloging users migrating from Passport.
The tutorial is web-based and is best viewed with Internet Explorer 4.01
or higher. Netscape browsers are not supported for this tutorial.
