LA VISTA PUBLIC LIBRARY WINS ILL WEB INTERFACE CONTEST
OCLC has picked the winners of the ILL Web Interface Contest and one of them is our very own La Vista Public Library! All comments submitted by December 31, 2001 using the "Feedback Form" within the new ILL Web Interface were entered into a random drawing. Three libraries were selected to win $1,000 credits on their OCLC ILL bills.
These comments were entered by Jean Hurst at La Vista Public Library:
"I have been using ILL services at our library for 20 years now and this new web interface is the GREATEST!!!! product I've seen come out of OCLC in a long time. Not that all of the products aren't wonderful. The web based interface is so easy to use you don't need to remember function keys, you just point and click. I have only just started using it and found it so simple to use I already feel like a pro. I can check what's coming in and what needs to be sent out in just a few seconds. GREAT WORK OCLC!"
OCLC will make the formal announcement during the OCLC ILL Users Group Meeting at ALA Midwinter in New Orleans.
The other winners are Eckerd College Library in St. Petersburg, Florida and Northwestern Connecticut Community College Library in Winsted, Connecticut.

WELCOME NEW
CATEXPRESS LIBRARIES
In response to the Nebraska Library Commission's offer to provide CatExpress at no cost for one year, twelve Nebraska libraries have signed up for the service. On January 1, twelve new CatExpress libraries will be added to the Nebraska group, bringing the total of Nebraska CatExpress users to fifty-four. We would like to welcome the following libraries to the CatExpress group:
In exchange for receiving the first year of CatExpress service at no cost to the library, these twelve have agreed to maintain the CatExpress service on their own in the future and also participate as an Interlibrary Loan lender.
Designed especially for smaller libraries, the CatExpress service offers an easy and affordable way to copy catalog library materials and it requires no special training. Since the service is web-based, there is no need to maintain or install software. Nebraska librarians report that the ease of use and savings of staff time are the primary benefits of using CatExpress. If you would like more information on CatExpress please visit our NEBASE website: </netserv/nebase/catx.html>.

NEBASE would like to introduce you to our new OCLC Library Services Consultant. Doug Doherty came to NEBASE in September and first visited NEBASE territory at the recent Annual Meeting-East in Lincoln. Since then Doug has made trips to Nebraska to meet with staff of several NEBASE member libraries.
As our direct link to OCLC, Doug primarily works with Christa Burns, NEBASE's OCLC Member Services Coordinator, to bring OCLC products and services to NEBASE member libraries. "I'm responsible for visiting libraries, learning how they are doing their business, and recommending integrated solutions," says Doug. He also serves as our resource for handling inquiries about OCLC services and pricing, as well as helping NEBASE solve any problems with access and billing for services.
|
|
In addition to serving as the main OCLC contact for Nebraska libraries Doug also is responsible for Illinois libraries through ILLINET. Since his start at OCLC in July of 2000 Doug has also worked with MINITEX and WILS, two other OCLC networks. Before coming to OCLC Doug worked for twelve years in the marketing and sales areas of Encyclopedia Britannica and served as a National Sales Manager for Britannica Online.
Originally from Kansas City, Doug is a Midwest native. Presently he lives with his wife and two children, son Mason and daughter Makenzie, in Oak Park, Illinois just outside of Chicago. He likes spending his free time working on their historic 1893 home, brewing his own beer, and enjoying the outdoors.
Doug tells us what he enjoys most about his job is the people he meets. "Libraries employ some of the most interesting and nicest people I have had the pleasure to work with. Building relationships with library staff and helping them is what keeps me motivated. My hope is that I'll get to work with Nebraska libraries for many years so I can personally meet most of the people that read this article."

DO I OWN
THIS BOOK?
DO YOU
OWN THIS
BOOK?
Setting Up Custom Library Groups in FirstSearch
When you are searching WorldCat or another database in FirstSearch have you
ever wondered if you own an item or if another library in your town, a
neighboring town, or on your campus owns an item? OCLC has made a few
enhancements to FirstSearch that can help
you quickly answer this question. In the past libraries that did their
cataloging through OCLC could limit their searches to items they owned with a
simple click of the mouse. Libraries that wanted to limit their searches to
another library could enter that library's symbol into a box. OCLC has made this
process simpler by adding a new feature called Custom Library Groups that all
libraries can take advantage of.
The Custom Library Group allows you to go into the FirstSearch Administrative
Module and create a group of up to ten libraries. This group will be displayed
on the FirstSearch search screen in the form of a drop down box where you can
select the name of the library that you want to limit your search to. When you
do a search and view the results, there will be an icon on the results page that
lets you know that a library in your group owns the item. For example, if you
were an academic library you might want to set up a group that contains the
public library in town. This way students doing research could also see what is
available at the public library. Or, a small public library that has patrons
that also use a larger public library and/or academic library in a neighboring
community could create a group that includes both the public and academic
library. The smaller library does not need to do their cataloging through OCLC
in order to take advantage of this feature.
Setting up a Custom Library Group
FirstSearch will currently allow you to set up to five groups with each
group containing ten libraries. The one catch to this is that you can only use
one of these five groups at a time. The setting that dictates what group you use
is located in the FirstSearch Administrative Module.
In order to set up a group you will need the symbol(s) for the library(s) that you would like to include in your group. I would suggest that you locate the symbol(s) before you access the FirstSearch Administrative Module. A list of Nebraska libraries that do their cataloging through OCLC is located at: </netserv/nebase/OCLCmemberLibs.asp>. You can search for other libraries on OCLC's web site at: <http://www.oclc.org/contacts/libraries/>.
Please note, as you go through these steps some actions will cause a small pop up window to open. Please be patient and wait for these windows to close on their own before you proceed.
1. Access your FirstSearch Administrative Module. If you do not know how to
do this or need your password, please contact a member of Network Services at
800-307-2665 or email Network Services.
2. Click on System Settings.
3. Click on Custom Library Groups.
4. Enter the name for the group. (Note there is a Maximum of thirty
characters/spaces.)
5. Click on the Add button.
6. Make sure the name of the group is selected in the Select Group box.
7. Enter the symbol of the first library you would like to add to the group.
8. Click on Add.
9. The library's symbol and name should now appear in the group list. If you do
not like how the library's name is displayed you can change it.
a. Highlight the name of the library you would like to
change.
b. In the Library Name box, enter the library name the way
you would like it displayed.
c. Click on rename.
d. It will ask you if you are sure that you want to rename
it.
e. Click on OK.
10. Repeat steps 7-9 until you have added all of the libraries you would like in
your group. The maximum number of libraries that you can include is ten.
11. When you have added all of the libraries you wish, click on Save Changes.
12. On the left hand side in the blue bar click on Library Holdings.
13. On the Library Holdings page under the section labeled Custom Library Group
Limit, select the group that you would like to use.
14. Click on Save Changes.
15. You may now exit the Administrative Module by clicking on Exit.
If you need help or have questions about setting up Custom Library Groups please email a member of Network Services or phone 800-307-2665.

DATABASE RENEWAL SEASON FAST APPROACHING
During this current subscription year we arranged discounted pricing for over thirty different databases. It's hard to believe that it's almost time to think about database pricing and renewals again. After the holiday season and through the spring we will be working on contract renewals. As in the past, we will send out pricing and renewal information over the TRIAL Mailing List as it becomes available. You can subscribe to the Trial Mailing List on our web site located at: </Lists/commands.asp>. The pricing information will also be posted to the Database Pricing Page </netserv/pricing.html> when vendors allow it. ANSWERING "THIS DAY IN HISTORY" QUESTIONS USING ELECTRIC LIBRARY
Do you ever run into patrons who need to know what happened on a particular day in history? Maybe they want a list of people who share their birthday? Or perhaps they want to know who died on a particular day? Traditionally librarians used print chronologies to answer such questions. While this is still a sound strategy, there are now a number of online resources that can be used as well. Electric Library, which the Nebraska Library Commission pays for on behalf of all public and post-secondary academic libraries in Nebraska, is one such resource.
Electric Library is a 100% full-text database that provides access to a wide variety of source material, including reference books. One reference book included in Electric Library is Events Day-By-Day. For each day of the year this work lists people born on that day, people who died on that day, historical events, holidays, and feast days of saints.
To retrieve the Events Day-By-Day entry for a particular day, type the month and day in the text entry box at the top of the Electric Library search screen (e.g., January 24). Next, type Events Day-By-Day in the Publication text entry box in the Advanced portion of the search screen. Finally, click on the Search button. This should pull up the entry you're looking for.
In addition to Electric Library, there are also a number of free websites that let you look up historical events by date. Two sites worth noting are Any Day-in-History <http://www.scopesys.com/anyday/> and The History Channel's This Day in History <http://www.historychannel.com/today/>.
In the past answering "this day in history" questions could be a challenge, particularly if your library didn't own a good print chronology. Now, however, between the Events Day-By-Day reference book available through Electric Library and the two websites mentioned above, you should be able to provide your patrons with more than enough information about any day in history!
