REGISTER FOR THE 2006 DATABASE ROADSHOW
We are pleased to announce that the ninth annual Database Roadshow has been scheduled for summer 2006.
The five-hour Database Roadshow will provide Nebraska librarians and media
specialists with an overview of the state-funded databases available through
NebraskAccess. The Roadshow will also include a tour of the Librarian's Toolbox,
which contains promotional and training material about NebraskAccess. As in past
years, the Roadshow will be divided into segments, with each focusing on a
particular database. During each segment we will discuss and demonstrate a
database, and then the class will have hands-on time to practice what they've
learned. Please bring any questions you may have and we will help you work
through them during the hands-on time.
All sessions will run from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm. There will be a one hour lunch
break at approximately 11:30. Lunch is on your own. For your comfort, you may
wish to bring a sweater, or dress in layers, as we are unable to make any
adjustments to the temperature of the computer labs.
There is no cost to attend the Database Roadshow. Continuing Education credits
of five hours can be earned by attending the Roadshow. Sessions are scheduled
for the following locations:
- Auburn - July 25
- Bassett - August 1
- Columbus - July 27
- Elkhorn - August 17
- Kearney - June 28
- Lincoln - August 25

RLG TO COMBINE WITH OCLC
After thoughtful consideration and thorough review, the Board of Directors of
the Research Libraries Group (RLG) and the OCLC Board of Trustees have signed a
definitive agreement that recommends the two service and research organizations
be brought together.
The combined organization will retain the name OCLC and offer an integrated
product line to give libraries, archives and museums new leverage in developing
services, standards and software that will help them support research and
disseminate knowledge online. In addition, RLG's program initiatives will be
brought forward as a new division within OCLC Research.
RLG will now ask its membership to approve the agreement. Voting will begin in
mid-May and conclude June 7.

NEBRASKACCESS FUNDING REQUEST UPDATE
Prior to the start of the second session of the 99th Nebraska Legislature, the Nebraska Library Commission submitted a mid-biennium appropriation request
for $325,000 in additional funds to be used to license subscription online
information services for statewide access through the NebraskAccess program.
Subscriptions would have included an online encyclopedia, plus additional online
information resources aimed at children in grades K-8.
The Nebraska Library Commission requested the funds in response to a pending
change to the Department of Education's Rule 10, which pertains to school
library media resources. This rule change requires schools to have at least one
encyclopedia set available in either print format or electronic format networked
for simultaneous access, with copyright dates in the past five years.
Rationale for the request included the fact that the Nebraska Library Commission already provides statewide access to a number of
online subscription resources through its NebraskAccess program and adding an
online encyclopedia to NebraskAccess, licensed for statewide use, would have
been an
efficient and cost-effective means of helping schools meet the new requirements
set by the State Board of Education.
Timeline:
-
Mid-January - Governor fails to include the
Nebraska Library
Commission's
request in the budget he submitted to the Legislature
-
January 31 - Library Commission's hearing on fund
request
-
March - Appropriations Committee includes the Library Commission's
request in its recommendations
-
April 3 - Governor Heinemann vetoes the Library Commission's funding
request
-
April 4 - Appropriations Committee fails to include the
Library Commission's funding request in its override motion
The Library Commission will continue to work on gaining additional funding to
improve its NebraskAccess service, a program that benefits all Nebraskans. If
you have questions about the Library Commission's appropriation request, please
contact Shannon Behrhorst.

FICTION CONNECTION READERS' ADVISORY TOOL ADDED
TO NEBRASKACCESS
The Nebraska Library Commission is pleased to announces that our
statewide Books In Print subscription now comes with complimentary
access to Fiction Connection, Bowker's new readers' advisory
service.
Direct links to Fiction Connection have been added to NebraskAccess
database access pages. Fiction Connection is also available via
links within the BooksInPrint.com and PatronBooksInPrint.com
interfaces or by going directly to www.fictionconnection.com.
With the addition of Fiction Connection to NebraskAccess,
recommending titles is now as easy as typing in an author, title,
subject, or ISBN. Once you've identified a book you like, ask
Fiction Connection to find similar titles and it will display a
recommended reading list of books that have similar characteristics
to the title originally selected. Alternately, you can browse for
books by topic, genre, setting, character, location, or timeframe.
And last but not least, Fiction Connection is a great resource for
identifying books in series, including series order information!!
Fiction Connection's primary focus is on fiction and biography
titles from 1997 forward, although older titles may be included if
they are part of a series, by a popular author, or are considered
classics. New content is added to Fiction Connection monthly.

LIBRARY OF CONGRESS TO CUT SERIES
AUTHORITY?
The Library of Congress (LC) announced on April 20 that it would no longer be
creating authority records for series titles as of May 1. As part of this
change, all new records created by LC would contain series title information in
a 490 MARC field with a first indicator 0. This means there would be no tracing
for controlled series titles-no 440 or 8XX fields created. In some local
systems, these headings may be searched by keyword but no consistent heading
would be assigned. Full details on why and what the Library of Congress would be
doing are available at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/series.html.
Some authority control providers, such as MARCIVE, and some material vendors who
provide bibliographic records have already stated they will provide series
authority work. But libraries using records directly from the LC web site or
from OCLC, and not using outside authority providers, would have to create their
own 440 and 8XX fields.
This announcement created much consternation among catalogers, as seen in the
flood of email on various cataloging lists. A petition drive to change this
policy was started, in spite of the short time between notification and
implementation. Librarians visiting Washington, D.C., for National Legislative Day
also expressed concern to LC officials. It seems to have had an effect: on May 1
LC announced the implementation date had been postponed to June 1. Any comments
regarding this policy may be directed to Beacher Wiggins, Director, Acquisitions
and Bibliotgraphic Access, Library of Congress, bwig@loc.gov.

MASTERMIND BEHIND MARC DIES
