Nominations for the State Advisory Council on Libraries are invited. New appointments will be made by the Commissioners in November for three-year terms beginning January 2000. The Council meets four times annually and advises the Library Commission on federal library programs and other issues. Council members are chosen from libraries in public, academic, school, and special settings, or are library customers. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has announced the 2000 competition for the National Award for Library Service and is seeking nominations of libraries that demonstrate extraordinary and innovative approaches to public service, reaching beyond the expected levels of community outreach and core programs generally associated with library services. All kinds of libraries are eligible. Nomination guidelines are available on the IMLS Web site: www.imls.fed.us/nals00app.htm. The winners will be announced during Library Week 2000 at a ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The Nebraska Library Commission is accepting applications for a Librarian (Services Coordinator) to serve as a consultant for Library Commission customers, dealing with issues such as library board relationships, e-rate, finance, and governance. Duties: work in conjunction with regional library systems toward improved library services statewide. Coordinate, promote, and evaluate programs and/or services of the Commission. Write and review reports and studies. Plan and conduct workshops, training activities, and other continuing education activities. Qualifications: Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association accredited program, plus experience in professional library/information work applicable to the knowledge, skills, and abilities required. Computer and library technology skills required. Must have a valid Nebraska driver's license with good driving record. Abilities: set goals, objectives, and strategies; communicate/interact with library professionals and nonprofessionals; read and understand federal and state directives and regulations; give presentations; deliver training; communicate effectively orally and in writing. Starting salary: $31,541. Nebraska librarians and media specialists are invited to attend the 1999 Nebraska Library Association (NLA)/Nebraska Educational Media Association (NEMA) Convention, "Libraries ... Media ... The NLA Scholarship Committee is planning a silent auction at the 1999 NLA/NEMA Conference in Lincoln to raise money for the Louise A. Nixon Scholarship fund. The committee is soliciting cash donations and items to be donated for the silent auction scheduled for October 21, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Cornhusker Hotel. The NEBASE Annual Meeting will be held September 10, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., at the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education, 33rd and Holdrege Streets, Lincoln. Keynote speaker Kate Nevins, Director of SOLINET, will revisit the Resource Dialog Retreat held in August 1996, and discuss the future of resource sharing. Cost: $15. On September 17 and 18, Oglala Lakota College and Chadron State College (CSC) will co-host the 1999 Nebraska Literature Festival on the campus of Chadron State College. The theme, "Crossing Borders: Geographical, Ethnic, and Literary Frontiers in Plains Literature," acknowledges and celebrates the interstate cooperation behind the 1999 Festival. Artists from several states, working in various formats and representing diverse cultures, will come together to read, act, discuss, and perform during the festivities. Nebraskans are invited to the Midwest Archives Conference (MAC)/Society of Rocky Mountain Archivists (SRMA) fall meeting in Lincoln, October 14-16. Preconference workshops on Wednesday, October 13, will include the Society of American Archivists' "Digital Imaging Technology" course (offered at the Gerald R. The Basic Skills course, Collection Development, includes development of policies and procedures addressing intellectual freedom and censorship, selection of materials, budgeting, and weeding. Collection Development is one of four core classes that are part of the requirements for Public Librarian Certification, and is equivalent to 12 CE credits. The Nebraska Community Foundation presents fundraising training sessions for public libraries, cosponsored by the Nebraska Library Commission and Nebraska's Regional Library Systems. This training focuses on fundraising basics and techniques necessary to form and implement public-private partnerships to support and sustain local library services.
