Deep Linking from Open WorldCat to Your Library's Catalog

In order to help libraries get the most out of the Open WorldCat program and other OCLC services like FirstSearch, OCLC has updated the tutorial on Deep Linking.

OCLC has updated the tutorial about how to establish deep links to your library's catalog with information for the Endeavor Voyager system in addition to additional details for several other library systems. You may access the updated version of the deep linking tutorial at http://www.oclc.org/worldcat/open/deeplinking/default.htm.

Open WorldCat can help drive users to libraries and increase circulation if they are setup to support Deep Linking. Deep Linking helps users navigate all the way to a specific record in the library online catalog after finding the item through internet search engines like Yahoo!, Google, or other partner sites. Some libraries are already set up to support this, others just need to fill out a simple form which should only take a few minutes.

Links that are set up through the OCLC FirstSearch administrative module are also active within many FirstSearch databases, enabling your users to link from records in those databases to matching records in your library's catalog.

OCLC will continue to update this linking resource as additional information becomes available. And YOU CAN HELP - by forwarding links for library catalogs not currently included in the tutorial or examples of variations of links in the tutorial that are working for you to openworldcat@oclc.org so we can share them with others.

OCLC Members Council Discusses Impact of Technology on Delivery of Library Services

OCLC Members Council met February 6-8 in Dublin, Ohio, to discuss new technologies, new opportunities to deliver electronic information, and new directions for a "bigger, better WorldCat."

Future Patterns of Technology Landscapes: Moving Libraries Beyond Their Comfort Zones was the theme for the second of three 2004/2005 Members Council meetings to consider findings from the OCLC Environmental Scan, a report produced for the OCLC worldwide membership to examine significant issues and trends impacting OCLC, libraries, museums, archives and other organizations, now and in the future.

ORDER PER-SEARCH ACCESS TO FIRSTSEARCH TODAY!

Order per-search access to the OCLC FirstSearch service today, before new prices take effect on July 1.

As of July 1, OCLC will raise the price of per search from $.85 to $.90. Consequently, the price of a block of 500 searches will increase from $425 to $450.

With per-search pricing, you pay by the search and purchase blocks of 500 searches in advance. Per-search pricing provides virtually unlimited simultaneous logon access to nearly 60 databases. The searches you buy under the open per-search pricing option are valid for two years from the date of purchase.

Take advantage of today's low search prices by ordering your searches before June 26. To place an order now for blocks and avoid the price increase, log onto the OCLC Online Service Center at http://www.oclc.org/servicecenter/.

Low Search Notification
Have you ever run out of searches unexpectedly? Do you know how many searches you have left? Low Search Notification lets you request that FirstSearch send an e-mail notice to you when the number of your remaining searches hits a threshold you specify.

The Low Search Notification feature is available through the FirstSearch Administrative Module at http://firstsearch.oclc.org/admin.  Within the FirstSearch Administrative Module, the Low Search Notification area appears under the Authentication/Access tab, on the General screen. To use this feature, enter a low search threshold number (for example, 200) and one or two e-mail addresses in the boxes provided in the Low Search Notification area of the Administrative Module.

When the number of searches remaining falls below the low search threshold number, FirstSearch sends an e-mail notice to the address or addresses entered. This gives you the warning you need to purchase additional searches before completely running out.

NEW INDEXES IN FIRSTSEARCH WORLDCAT SUPPORT UNION LISTING

Please note: This announcement pertains to the availability of local holdings information in the WorldCat database on the OCLC FirstSearch service and in WorldCat Resource Sharing. It does not impact the Union List service in any manner. OCLC is committed to continuing the Union List Service and will provide you with additional information on its migration soon.

We are pleased to announce that new indexes are now available in the Expert search screen in the WorldCat database on FirstSearch and in WorldCat Resource Sharing that replicates the functionality provided by the separate FirstSearch Union Lists of Periodicals database on FirstSearch.

Consequently, OCLC will no longer be updating the Union Lists of Periodicals database and will discontinue offering it on FirstSearch with effect from Sunday, June 12. The database was last updated on its regular semi-annual update of August 21, 2004, and that date is shown on each of its search screens.

These new indexes are listed in the drop down search box in the Expert search screen and are documented at the end of the WorldCat Index Labels and Examples help screen. While they are listed in the expert screen, the index label and search term(s) may also be entered in any search box in the basic and advanced search screens.

The new indexes in WorldCat are:

• Local Holdings - present
• Local Holdings - by state/province phrase
• Local Holdings - by city phrase
• Local Holdings - by institution symbol
• Local Holdings - by groups
• Local Holdings - by 4-character local holding symbol phrase

CREATE CUSTOM HOLDINGS GROUPS WITH POLICIES DIRECTORY DATA

Your custom holdings groups and paths will be more accurate when you use the Policies Directory https://illpolicies.oclc.org to create and maintain your groups. This will allow individual institutions to customize their sorting preferences for groups of lenders such as LVIS and AV lenders by: state, cost, delivery method, or other criteria.

You can learn how to use the Policies Directory to create custom holdings groups with the brief online demo available at: http://www.oclc.org/ill/options/managelenders/customholdings/.

WORLDCAT RESOURCE SHARING INSTALL ANNOUNCEMENTS

On Sunday, April 17 OCLC installed new functionality in WorldCat Resource Sharing.

Included are:

• Batch printing: Two options are available for browser batch printing of any category: full request (full request with no restrictions on field/character limits; may run onto to multiple pages; as available now with some enhancements) and two requests per page
  
• Auto-selection based on local data record information will work with any/all databases from which you can place "staff ILL' requests in WorldCat Resource Sharing.
  
• Derived searching: Using the Expert Search Screen, staff will be able to utilize four derived searches in WorldCat: author/title, derived title, derived corporate/conference name and derived personal name. These are the same searches used on the Passport for ILL and ILLiad 6.x system by resource sharing and cataloging users. This implementation on the FirstSearch platform for reference and resource sharing staff is the same as in OCLC Connexion.
  
• Direct request from within WorldCat Resource Sharing: Library staff will be able to send requests through their Direct Request profiles for processing from the WorldCat Resource Sharing interface. This will allow staff to do a minimum amount of work on the request and allow the Direct Request profiles to apply the correct constant data and choose lenders based on the custom holdings path specified in the profile.

Join the WebDewey & Abridged WebDewey Group Purchase

Join the NEBASE WebDewey & Abridged WebDewey Group and experience the power of Dewey on the web!

Now your library can benefit from web-based access to an enhanced version of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) database through WebDewey or Abridged WebDewey. OCLC is offering a discounted price to users who join the NEBASE WebDewey & Abridged WebDewey Group.

The current WebDewey & Abridged WebDewey Group subscription year runs from January 1 - December 31. Libraries may join the WebDewey & Abridged WebDewey Group at any time. Midyear subscriptions will be prorated. Orders must be received by the 15th of the month for a start date of the 1st of the following month.

Libraries who wish to subscribe do not have to be members of OCLC. Any library can subscribe - WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey are available to both OCLC member and non-member libraries.

WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey, which correspond to the unabridged and abridged print editions, are updated on a quarterly basis, bringing you ongoing updates implemented by the Dewey editorial team almost as soon as they occur. The Web versions also offer additional electronic functionality not available in the print editions to make your classification work more efficient.

If your collection holds less than 20,000 titles, Abridged WebDewey is for you. It gives you access to an enhanced version of the Abridged Dewey. Abridged WebDewey is based on the new Abridged Edition 14.

WebDewey has been based on the enhanced DDC 22 database since June 2003.

To see a hands-on demo of WebDewey, you can watch the NEBASE "Introduction to WebDewey" online session which was recorded and is available online for you to view at your leisure. The recorded session is viewable from a web browser. You will need a sound card and either earphones or speakers. There is no cost to view this recorded session. WEBDEWEY/ABRIDGED WEBDEWEY FEBRUARY 2005 QUARTERLY UPDATE

WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey are updated quarterly. Both services contain the latest version of the schedules, tables, Manual, and Relative Index entries from their respective enhanced DDC databases. The hierarchical displays in WebDewey and Abridged WebDewey feature updated main class and division captions (e.g., 700 Arts & recreation; 790 Sports, games & entertainment).

WebDewey is a web-based version of the enhanced DDC 22 database. This February 2005 release includes:

• all updates to Dewey Decimal Classification, Edition 22, through January 2005 (corrections, new developments, new built numbers, and additional electronic index terms)
  
• thousands of Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) that have been statistically mapped to Dewey numbers from records in WorldCat (the OCLC Online Union Catalog) and intellectually mapped by DDC editors (through LCSH Weekly List no. 14, 2004)
  
• thousands of Relative Index terms and built numbers not available in print
  
• links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records
  
• selected mappings from Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)

• all content from Abridged Edition 14, through January 2005
  
• LCSH that have been intellectually mapped to Dewey headings by DDC editors, including mappings to Abridged Edition 13 numbers from the OCLC publication, Subject Headings for Children
  
• links from mapped LCSH to the LCSH authority records
  
• mappings between abridged Dewey numbers and subject headings from the 18th edition of H.W. Wilson's Sears List of Subject Headings

PASSPORT FOR CATALOGING MIGRATION DATE CHANGE

Attention OCLC Catalogers using Passport for Cataloging...

In light of recent system disruptions and in response to requests from RSP and library staff, OCLC has extended the May 1, migration date for Passport cataloging and NACO CatME users to June 5, to allow more time for training in preparation for the move.

Discontinuation of the remaining CatME functionality, CJK software, and Arabic software will remain June 30. Union listing activities remain in Passport until later this year.

OCLC understands that recent system problems caused delays in training and migration efforts. Although this extension allows an additional five weeks for Passport cataloging and NACO CatME users to migrate to Connexion, we highly recommend that users make the move as soon as possible.

The migration Web site http://www.oclc.org/migration/ has been updated to reflect these changes.

OCLC appreciates your continued understanding and, once again, we apologize for the inconveniences caused by the recent system problems.

AUTHORITIES MIGRATION TIMELINE

As you are already aware, support for Passport for cataloging functionality ends June 5.

The next major phase of OCLC's migration involves moving all NACO processes to Connexion. This phase of the migration follows the implementation of the Review Process, available in the Connexion Browser and Client applications. OCLC is working with the Library of Congress to ensure the changes will not result in any changes to the formatting of OCLC authority records, nor result in any disruptions to the NACO project.

Of paramount importance: Effective June 5, any remaining authority records that are in an institution's save file will be permanently lost (locks will be removed, edits will be lost, etc.). OCLC staff will not be able to retrieve any lost data.

Because authority records that are currently in the Passport or CatME save file cannot be moved into Connexion, it is imperative that appropriate action be taken to clean out all authority records that reside in an institution's save file.

As a result of these changes, on June 5, the following processes will be permanently disabled in Passport and/or CatME:

• The ability to access the online authority save file via Passport users,
  
• The ability to add new authority records via Passport and/or CatME,
  
• The ability to replace authority records via Passport and/or CatME,
  
• The ability to access submitted/responded records via Passport and/or CatME,
  
• The ability to search or browse the OCLC authority file using Passport,
  
• The ability to export authority records using Passport

The WorldCat searching enhancements include "true" keyword searching using words and phrases and Boolean operators. You can search over 90 indexes, and you can browse over 50 indexes!!! We HIGHLY recommend that you complete the Searching WorldCat tutorial available from http://www.oclc.org/support/training/connexion/client/tutorial/ prior to installing Connexion client 1.30. Are you migrating from Passport, CatME, CJK, or Arabic? CONNEXION BROWSER NACO FUNCTIONALITY CHANGES IMPLEMENTED

OCLC installed the following changes to Connexion on Sunday, April 17, that impact NACO functionality done with the Connexion browser interface. (Note: if you use the Connexion client interface, please see the article below specific to the changes for the Connexion client.)

Changes to duplicate detection when adding/replacing authority records
The system no longer automatically checks for normalized 1xx fields when adding or replacing an authority record. Previously, the system determined if the normalized 1xx matched another record in the Authority File, and if a match was found the add or replace was blocked. To allow acceptable normalized duplicates, based on current national cataloging practice, the system has been changed to remove this check. However, we do encourage you to check for duplicates prior to adding or replacing authority records using the Validate command. If a normalized duplicate is found between the 1xx heading in the record to be added or replaced and a 1xx heading already present in another authority record, the system will continue to report the duplicate with the Validate command. If you select add or replace, even after viewing this message, the system will not block the record from being added/replaced. OCLC expects to re-implement this automatic duplicate detection with additional changes in June.

CONNEXION CLIENT CHANGES IMPLEMENTED

OCLC installed the following changes to Connexion on Sunday, April 17, that impact the Connexion client interface. These changes were installed at the OCLC host and do not require you to update your Connexion client software. (Note: if you use the Connexion browser interface, please see article above specific to the changes for the Connexion browser.)

Changes that impact both Connexion client version 1.20 and 1.30 users:

• Authority browse list highlighting -- Previously when you completed a browse (scan) in the Authority File and selected an entry from the root browse list that resulted in another list, the second list opened with the entry below the closest match highlighted. Now, the entry that matches your selection is highlighted.
  
  
• Locked authority records in the local save file -- NACO participants can lock authority records and save them to the local file. Previously the lock on the local save file record was lost when the first action was taken on the record, such as Validate. Now, the lock is retained with the local save file record correctly.
  
  
• Changes to duplicate detection when adding/replacing authority records (NACO) -- The system no longer automatically checks for normalized 1xx fields when adding or replacing an authority record. OCLC expects to re-implement this automatic duplicate detection with additional changes in June.
  
  
• Ayn in authority records -- Records retrieved from the Authority File prior to this change include the incorrect character for the Ayn (02BF was used instead of 02BB). This has been resolved. However, records retrieved from the Authority File and saved prior to this change will still have the incorrect character, so replace the incorrect character (use Edit, Enter Diacritics or the default keystroke shortcut <Ctrl><Alt><O>) before exporting.

• WorldCat browse list highlighting -- Last week OCLC changed the browse (scan) results list for WorldCat to include 25 entries instead of 50. With this change, the closest match is listed on line 12, but line 25 was highlighted. Now, line 12 is highlighted.
  
  
• WorldCat browse title search entered without punctuation -- When entering a browse (scan) from the command line, you enter either a colon or equal sign after the index label: scan ti:test or scan ti=test. Previously, if you entered this incorrectly without the punctuation, you received an incorrect result list. Now, you receive an error message.
  
  
• WorldCat search qualified by date using question marks -- Previously if you entered question marks with the date qualifier, the search failed. Now, the date range is searched correctly. For example, 19?? retrieves records between 1900 and 1999.
  
  
• WorldCat author/title keyword search results sort -- Previously some author and title keyword searches resulted in incorrectly sorted truncated lists; now the sort is correct.
  
  
• Display holdings -- Previously when you displayed holdings on a record, each holding was displayed on a separate line. Now the holdings display correctly with all holdings in one state listed together on a single line.
