STATEWIDE HERITAGEQUEST ONLINE ACCESS IS A HIT!
The Nebraska Library Commission began providing statewide access to
HeritageQuest Online, a subscription genealogical resource, on February 1.
Less than a month later, we're pleased to report that Nebraska librarians,
library patrons, and residents have performed over 27,000 searches! Also in
February, ProQuest trainer Kimberly Bastian conducted six online training
sessions on HeritageQuest Online for Nebraska library staff. Each session
accommodated 12 attendees and lasted 1.5 hours. Due to demand, additional
sessions are being planned-watch the TRIAL and NebraskAccess4Lib mailing lists
for dates!
The interest expressed in HeritageQuest Online thus far is a testament not just
to the popularity of genealogy, but also to the promotional efforts of
librarians across the state who quickly heralded its availability. Thanks to all
of you who got the word out in such a timely fashion!
If your library hasn't yet promoted HeritageQuest Online but is interested in
doing so, maybe we can help. Check out the following promotional items available
through the Librarian's Toolbox
/nebraskaccess/toolbox/.
- Bookmark: "Explore your roots in HeritageQuest Online"
- Bookmark: "Need help with your family tree?"
- Poster: "Need help with your family tree?"
- Customizable HeritageQuest Online Press Release
If you'd like to learn more about HeritageQuest Online, be sure to review the
extensive documentation provided by ProQuest. For your convenience, we have
linked to this material from not only the "Training Information for Librarians"
page within the Toolbox, but also from the three "Help for Users" pages.
HeritageQuest Online is available to all Nebraska residents through
NebraskAccess, /nebraskaccess. If you have any
questions about access or content, please don't hesitate to contact any member

We hope these lesson plans will meet the need expressed by various media

NEW CATALOGING RULES IN THE OFFING
In 2007, AACR2 (Anglo American Cataloging Rules, 2nd ed.) will be totally
replaced. The draft of the new edition is called AACR3, but that may not be its
final title.
Why is a totally new edition needed? In a presentation, Barbara Tillet stated:
"Given the complexity of applying AACR2 to materials in today's environment of
analog and digital and mixed media, we see an opportunity to simplify AACR and
to establish it as a content standard for resource description." http://www.collectionscanada.ca/jsc/docs/aacr3pptjan2005.pdf.
Although the changes may simplify cataloging rules and 2007 might still seem a
long way off to many of you, now is not too soon to start paying attention to
what could be major changes. The draft for Part I approaches bibliographic
description in a new way: three sections provide general rules, rules regarding
content, and rules regarding media. GMDs (general material descriptions) are
being reconsidered in view of content and medium. The draft also incorporates
ideas from the FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) model.
In addition to being aware of how the proposed changes could affect your
cataloging procedures, you should also consider how the changes may affect your
local automated system.
For the latest information on AACR3's progress, see the web page: Joint Steering
Committee for Revision of Anglo-American Cataloging Rules: Current Activities
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/jsc/current.html. Also, a session on AACR3
is scheduled for ALA in Chicago this summer.
13-Digit ISBN Reminder
Now that items are arriving with 13-digit ISBNs, please remember to follow
OCLC's interim policy. When doing original cataloging in OCLC, place 13-digit
ISBNs in field 024 with a first-indicator of 3. For more details, see OCLC
Interim Support for ISBN 13
http://www.oclc.org/news/announcements/announcement96.htm.
