OCLC PRODUCT OF THE MONTH :
QUESTIONPOINT
COLLABORATIVE REFERENCE SERVICE
The new QuestionPoint collaborative reference service links a global network of
reference librarians who interact with library users and share questions and
answers.
With QuestionPoint, your library will gain a powerful, easy-to-use resource to
provide digital reference services. Your users will gain a resource that allows
them to submit questions at any time through your library's web site.
QuestionPoint extends reference support directly to your users through web-based
forms and online chat capabilities, and it enables you to answer your users'
questions or route them to libraries within your group prior to escalating
unanswered questions to the global network.
What is QuestionPoint?
QuestionPoint is a collaborative reference service the Library of Congress and
OCLC worked together to develop, with input from participating members of the
Global Reference Network (a group of libraries and institutions worldwide that
are committed to digital reference.) It enables libraries to:

OCLC FIRSTSEARCH FEATURED DATABASE AND ELECTRONIC COLLECTIONS
ONLINE FEATURED PUBLISHER FOR NOVEMBER
Featured Database for November is Sociological Abstracts.
Sociological Abstracts, produced by CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts), is
available during November as the FirstSearch Featured Database of the Month. The
database is available for searching at no charge from the FirstSearch web site
at <http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/databases/index.htm>.
Sociological Abstracts provides access to the latest research in sociology and
related disciplines in the social and behavioral sciences. It draws information
from an international selection of journals, serials, conference papers, books,
and dissertations. Records added after 1974 contain in-depth and non-evaluative
abstracts of journal articles. Click the Subjects icon to access the Thesaurus
of Sociological Indexing Terms, recently added to Sociological Abstracts on
FirstSearch to help improve search precision.
Featured Publisher for November 2002 is Edward Arnold Publishers Ltd.
Edward Arnold Publishers Ltd. <http://www.arnoldpublishers.com>
is the OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online Featured Publisher for
November 2002. Arnold publishes academic journals in engineering, linguistics,
geography and environmental sciences, medicine, the humanities and statistics.
Its journal War in History is available during November for searching at no

NOTICE OF DISCONTINUATION OF THE OCLC FIRSTSEARCH FEATURED
DATABASE OF THE MONTH PROMOTION
Effective at the end of December 2002, OCLC will discontinue its FirstSearch
Featured Database of the Month promotion. The Featured Publisher of the Month
will continue, however, for the foreseeable future.
OCLC has featured a database each month on the FirstSearch web site for
searching at no charge since March 2001. The Featured Database of the Month
promotion was intended to provide a way for librarians and library users to
sample unfamiliar databases and help libraries make purchase decisions.
There are now several no-charge practice databases available on the FirstSearch
web site at <http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/learning/index.htm>.
The set of practice
files includes a newly updated subset version of WorldCat, PWorldCat, that
features recent popular enhancements. PWorldCat in particular will help
libraries experience the power of the FirstSearch service, using OCLC's premier
database. Libraries may also request trials of FirstSearch databases they would
like to try out.
Please contact NEBASE (402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665) or OCLC Support
(1-800-848-5800 or <support@oclc.org>)
with questions.

OCLC FIRSTSEARCH PSYCARTICLES DISCOUNT
Until December 1, customers who either already have a PsycINFO site
license or who purchase a new PsycINFO license will receive a 20% reduction on
the FirstSearch price for a "new" PsycARTICLES license.
And by signing a three-year agreement with American Psychological Association, customers can guarantee that
data fee increases for PsycARTICLES will be no more than 4 percent annually
during second and third years of the contract. You can take advantage of either
offer or both offers. The discount applies only to PsycARTICLES; purchasing both
PsycARTICLES and PsycINFO concurrently does not provide a discount on PsycINFO.
Please call Jeannette Powell at 402-471-7740 or 800-307-2665 or e-mail Jeannette Powell

OCLC FIRSTSEARCH SERVICE ENHANCEMENTS
This article includes information for library staff in reference, interlibrary
loan, collection development and systems.
Please contact NEBASE (402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665) or OCLC User and Network
Support (1-800-848-5800 or <support@oclc.org>)
with questions about these enhancements to the OCLC FirstSearch service.
SEPTEMBER 2002 ENHANCEMENTS
WORLDCAT
Option to Suppress ILL by Document Type
Librarians have asked for a way to suppress the ILL icon for selected
document types, particularly Internet Resources, in order to avoid confusion and
disappointment among users who submit ILL requests for items that can't be
borrowed. In response to this request, FirstSearch administrators can now
control which document types retrieved in WorldCat on FirstSearch will display
an interlibrary loan icon. Librarians will save time and money because they will
not be processing requests for document types their library cannot or does not
want to attempt to borrow, and users will experience less frustration over ILL
requests for materials that cannot be borrowed, since they will not be able to
submit them.
Practice WorldCat Database (PWorldCat) Now Includes All Enhancements to WorldCat
on FirstSearch
The practice version of the WorldCat database, PWorldCat, available from the
FirstSearch web site at <http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/learning/index.htm>,
now reflects all of the many enhancements that have been made to WorldCat on
FirstSearch over the last year. The practice database is a 6,000 record subset
of the full WorldCat database and represents a wide range of dates and record
formats. It is available at no charge for those wishing to learn the FirstSearch
service. Libraries that do not yet provide access to WorldCat on FirstSearch can
try out a version that reflects the full functionality of the database, and
libraries will find the practice version of WorldCat on FirstSearch useful for
instruction purposes.

Sixty-two New OCLC FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online Journals
Eleven new journals from four publishers have been added to OCLC FirstSearch
Electronic Collections Online, bringing the online total to 4,236 journals
available. The new titles and their ISSNs are available at <http://www2.oclc.org/oclc/fseco/index.asp>.
Thesaurus Now Available in INSPEC Database
Users of the INSPEC database are now able to search the INSPEC Thesaurus. As
in the thesauri and subject heading files available in other FirstSearch
databases, users access the INSPEC Thesaurus by clicking the Subjects icon on
the basic, advanced, or expert search screen, then typing in a word or concept.
The INSPEC Thesaurus supplies preferred term(s) for the search concept, along
with broader and narrower terms, that may be expanded. Clicking a hotlinked term
automatically launches a search.

WORLDCAT
netLibrary Tables of Contents Available
OCLC continues to enhance records in WorldCat on the OCLC FirstSearch
service with content that will let users evaluate materials that they want to
research in greater depth. Users will now be able to see tables of contents
available in netLibrary's collection of eBooks in the detailed WorldCat records
for these items.

Thesaurus Now Available in Sociological Abstracts Database
Users of the Sociological Abstracts database on FirstSearch are now able to
search the Thesaurus of Sociological Indexing Terms. As in the thesauri and
subject heading files available in other FirstSearch databases, users access the
Thesaurus of Sociological Indexing Terms by clicking the Subjects icon on the

OCLC ILL ENHANCEMENT WILL ADD LENDER'S LDR INFO TO ILL
REQUESTS
In response to user requests and feedback, OCLC will be adding local data record
information from the OCLC Union List service to the lender screen of ILL
requests in the OCLC ILL service. The lender's local holdings information will
appear in ILL requests in the Web interface to the OCLC ILL service, as well as
in Passport, ILLME, and ILLiad.
The purpose of the addition of local holdings information to the lender screen
is to allow lending libraries to quickly and efficiently identify requests that
can be immediately declined. This enhancement will support quicker processing of
new lending requests and improve turn-around time.
How it will work in ILL:
OCLC LOCAL DATA RECORD BATCHLOADING SERVICE OFFERED AT NO
CHARGE THROUGH JUNE 2003
Libraries wishing to update their local data records (LDR) can do so through
OCLC Batch Processing at no charge for data compliant with the MARC 21 Format
for Holdings Data through June 2003. A nominal fee is charged for patterned data
submitted in non-MARC formats. Libraries must request to have their holdings
batchloaded before June 30, 2003 to take advantage of the promotion. A library
may submit batch files on a regular schedule of their choice, or update with
one-time batch project and then maintain LDRs online through the OCLC Union List
service.
For more information on OCLC Batch Processing, go to <http://www.oclc.org/batchprocessing/localdatarecords/>.

OCLC LOW VOLUME ILL PRICING FOR CATEXPRESS SUBSCRIBERS
Are you looking for a simple, low cost way to provide ILL services to your
patrons? Would you like to pay a single annual fee for your OCLC ILL
service just as you do for your OCLC CatExpress service?
If you are a CatExpress subscriber, you are eligible for OCLC's Low Volume
ILL pricing option. This Low Volume ILL option is special pricing
available only to CatExpress libraries.
Low Volume ILL pricing is based on the number of ILL requests you make per
year. The three levels available are:
| 1 - 50 requests per year | $ 150.00 |
| 51-100 requests per year | $ 295.00 |
| 101-150 requests per year | $ 425.00 |
This ILL cost would be in addition to the cost of whichever level of CatExpress
you subscribe to, and is an annual charge, just like CatExpress.
Using CatExpress and the Web Interface to the OCLC ILL service, you will have
access to both OCLC cataloging and interlibrary loan through simple Web-based
interfaces. You will be able to utilize the world's largest library-supported
bibliographic database for all of your cataloging and interlibrary loan needs.
If you are interested in switching your current ILL pricing to the Low Volume
ILL pricing option or if you would like to add OCLC ILL to your account, please
contact Christa Burns at 402-471-3107 or 800-307-2665 or e-mail Christa Burns.

END OF SUPPORT FOR CATME VERSIONS 1.20, 1.21, 2.00
OCLC ended support for all versions of CatME except versions 2.10
(English) and 2.11 (Spanish) on October 31, 2002. If you are still using an
older version of CatME, please upgrade to CatME version 2.10 or 2.11 as soon as
possible. CatME software is available for download from the OCLC web site and it
is included on the OCLC Access Suite compact disc. Consult the CatME home page
at <http://www.oclc.org/catme/> for
more information on downloading the software or ordering the OCLC Access Suite
CD.
CatME versions 2.10 and 2.11 are the final releases of CatME software. The CatME
team is focusing on developing the new Windows client for OCLC Connexion. The
first phase of the client is scheduled for release in 2nd quarter 2003. For more
information, please visit the Connexion home page at <http://www.oclc.org/connexion/>.
Eventually, Connexion will replace all currently existing cataloging interfaces
including CatME. However, OCLC does not have a timeframe for when CatME 2.10 and
2.11 support will end. It will be sometime after 2004, when all CatME
functionality has been added to Connexion, and when CatME users have had time to
migrate to the new interface. OCLC will notify users at least one year in
advance of discontinuing CatME.

DEWEY CUTTER PROGRAM UPDATED
Do you use the Cutter Sanborn or the Cutter tables for your cutter
numbers? Are you tired of looking them up in the printed tables? Then try
the Dewey Cutter Program, recently updated, and available for free
download at <http://www.oclc.org/dewey/products/index.htm#cutter>.
This program is based on OCLC's Four-Figure Cutter tables, and is a
stand-alone application. It allows you to enter text, get the Cutter
number, and then paste it back.
The OCLC Four-Figure Cutter tables (Cutter and Cutter Sanborn) are
compatible with the earlier tables and reduce the need to extrapolate
numbers. New features in this version of the software include automatic
pasting of text to be cuttered, copying of the resulting cutter, and a new
help topic.
The same cuttering ability is already present in the latest versions of
OCLC CatME, OCLC CJK software, and as a macro that can be downloaded for
use with Passport.

OCLC WINDOWS CLIENT TO OCLC CONNEXION PREVIEW
OCLC has added additional information to the Connexion web site about the
upcoming Windows client interface to OCLC Connexion. Please see <http://www.oclc.org/connexion/features/client/>

BROWSER REQUIREMENTS FOR OCLC ILL WEB INTERFACE
The browser requirements for using the OCLC ILL Web Interface will be changing
in the next few months. With the release of the new OCLC Policies Directory in
the first quarter of 2003, the ILL Web Interface will no longer support the use
of Netscape version 4.x or Internet Explorer version 4.x. The functionality
needed for the Policies Directory is not supported by these older versions and
in order to have a smooth interaction between the ILL Web Interface and the
Policies directory, OCLC will discontinue support of the older browser versions
for the ILL Web Interface.
If you have not already done so, please upgrade your browsers to:

NETSCAPE 4.X SUPPORT ENDS JANUARY 19, 2003
OCLC plans to end OCLC Connexion support for Netscape 4.x on January 19, 2003.
At that time, Connexion users, including CatExpress and WebDewey users, will no
longer be able to log on using Netscape 4.x. If you are accessing Connexion via
one of these older version browsers, please upgrade to a higher version as soon
as possible.
Ending support of Netscape 4.x will enable quicker development of enhancements
to the Connexion service because additional programming has often been necessary
to support these older versions of Netscape. Since special coding to accommodate
for Netscape 4.x will no longer be needed, OCLC will be able to add new and
better features to the system. In addition, ending support of Netscape 4.x will
eliminate the system problems that users often experience when using one of
these older versions of Netscape.
