NEBASE |
This year's NEBASE Annual Meeting - West was held in Alliance on April
4th. Forty-eight participants met at Alliance Learning Center for the full
day of sessions. This year's meeting was the most highly attended western
meeting ever held.
A highlight of the afternoon meeting was the Gates Grant Application
session. Pam Scott, Continuing Education Coordinator, helped public
library applicants through the application and answered many questions
staff had about the program. Through the Gates U.S. Library Program over
1.6 million dollars in equipment, software and training is available on a
non-competitive basis to qualifying public libraries across Nebraska.
That morning OCLC members received an update on recent OCLC activities and
future plans by Western Service Manager, Paul Cappuzzello. The morning
also included updates on the activities of the NEBASE Advisory Council
from the current chair, Pat Hughes. Michael LaCroix, NEBASE delegate to
the OCLC Members Council, provided insight into the upcoming changes to
the OCLC Membership.
Though the day was full there was also a chance for participants to hear
about the upcoming changes to the OCLC cataloging interface. Christa Burns
presented a "Life Without Passport" session for those affected by change
from Passport to web-based cataloging services.
The afternoon offered two hands-on workshops for library staff. For those
interested in learning more about the FirstSearch databases offered at no
cost to libraries through the Commission, Allana Novotny and Susan Knisely
provided extra insight into the FirstSearch product and its many features.
Others were learning with Christa Burns as she provided a training
demonstration on OCLC's new and easier Interlibrary Loan web interface.
Thanks to everyone that attended the April 4th meeting. We look forward to
seeing you next year!

OVER 150 TRAINED AT NEBASE WORKSHOPS
Last fall the NEBASE Advisory Council created a training assessment survey that
was distributed to the NEBASE-L mailing list, participants of the NEBASE Annual
Meeting - East and to the six regional library system mailing lists. Results
from the survey provided NEBASE with an idea of what types of training our
members and other library staff throughout the state would like to attend.
Since that time NEBASE scheduled a training calendar that began in December of
2001. Since December 34 workshops have been offered and over 150 librarians and
library staff have attended these workshops. Training sessions have been held
across the state including: Alliance, Kearney, Norfolk, and Lincoln and more
workshops are being scheduled at this time and will continue throughout the
summer.
For information on upcoming training sessions, please visit: </netserv/nebase/oclcworkshops.html>.
If you are interesting in hosting a workshop or have any workshop needs in your
library or system please call Christa Burns, OCLC Member Services Coordinator at

TEACH YOURSELF OCLC WITH FREE ONLINE TUTORIALS
Are you unable to attend a scheduled NEBASE workshop? Would you like
to brush up on your OCLC searching, cataloging or interlibrary loan
skills? Do you have a new staff member to train? Would you like to
see an OCLC product in action before making a purchasing decision?
Tutorials, lessons, guided tours, and demonstrations for many OCLC
products and services can be found on the OCLC Training web site at
<http://www.oclc.org/support/training/>.
The OCLC CatExpress Tutorial provides a simulation of the
CatExpress service, a web-based tool for inexpensive and easy copy
cataloging. The course includes exercises in searching, adding local
information, setting holdings, and downloading records. It takes the
learner through the basic steps of CatExpress from start to finish
and mirrors the simplicity of the product itself.
Using the OCLC Interlibrary Loan Web Interface: An OCLC
Tutorial is available from the ILL Web Interface web site at <http://www.oclc.org/oclc/ill/webinterface.htm>.
Two versions of the tutorial, one for current users and one for new
users of OCLC ILL, are included in this training module. The
tutorials use interactive screen shots to teach basic and advanced
features of the ILL Web Interface.
Go to the Cataloging Micro Enhancer Learning and Teaching web site
at <http://www.oclc.org/catme/learning/>
to learn what CatME can do for your library. The OCLC CatME
Guided Tour provides screen graphics to illustrate system
features and functions. Learning to Use OCLC CatME for Windows
includes lessons that may be used as learning guides or review
tools.
Using WebDewey: An OCLC Tutorial is now available at <http://www.oclc.org/dewey/about/tutorials.htm>.
Use this online tutorial to learn how to make the most effective use
of WebDewey or to preview WebDewey before subscribing. This tutorial
introduces you to searching and browsing, teaches you how to create
user notes, and shows you how to build numbers accurately and
efficiently with WebDewey.
Searching WorldCat: An OCLC Tutorial uses hands-on exercises
to teach searching strategies and techniques in a self-paced,
offline environment. Use this tutorial to become a more efficient
searcher of WorldCat records from the OCLC Cataloging, Interlibrary
Loan, Selection, and Union List services.
Using Interlibrary Loan: An OCLC Tutorial contains self-paced
training materials that teach the main functions of the OCLC
borrowing and lending cycle as well as general ILL concepts. In the
easy-to-use Windows environment, users get practical, hands-on
information through system simulation and practice exercises. Other
topics include OCLC ILL Custom Holdings, multiple constant data,
"Reasons for saying No," and OCLC ILL Direct Requests.
Training materials are also available on the OCLC Training web
site (<http://www.oclc.org/support/training/>)
for OCLC FirstSearch, the OCLC Cooperative Online Resource Catalog
(CORC), and OCLC WebExpress.

LINKING USERS TO INDIVIDUAL FIRSTSEARCH DATABASES
Did you know that you can place links to individual FirstSearch databases on your library's web pages? When you do this, your patrons can click on a link and be taken directly to the default search screen for a specific database. This eliminates the need for patrons to first enter the FirstSearch service and then select a database. It also provides librarians with a chance to highlight specific FirstSearch databases that will be of interest to their patrons. Librarians can do this by annotating the links patrons click on in order to provide them with more information about why they might want to select a specific database.
The easiest way to connect patrons to individual FirstSearch databases is via special IP-address recognition links on your library's web page. The steps involved in establishing these links are outlined below:
Below is an example of an annotated link to the NetFirst database as it might appear on a library's web page:
NetFirst - Select this database to identify high-quality Internet resources on a variety of topics.
Here is the HTML code used to create the annotated link to NetFirst:

If you have any questions about how to create IP-address recognition links to
individual FirstSearch databases, please don't hesitate to give me a call. For
information about additional components that can be used in IP-address
recognition URLs, see <http://www.oclc.org/firstsearch/documentation/ip/ipcomponentsum.htm>.
