CREATIVE WAYS TO USE THE WILSON DATABASES
Did you know that you can create links to a specific journal or even a specific article in the Wilson OmniFile? How about providing your patrons with a clickable calendar so they can find out who was born or who died on a particular day in history? Do you have a lot of patrons asking for information on the same topic? Why not create a link on your website that will perform the search for that topic in Wilson? These are just a few of fun and creative ways you can use the Wilson databases. Click on the examples to see how they work.
Creating links for you own website is easy to do. Below are a few examples
of how the links can be customized. More details can be found online at:
/netserv/wilsonsamples. Any of the examples
including the calendar and journal list can be copied and used on your own
website. If you have questions or need help customizing your own links contact Allana Novotny (email) or phone 800-307-2665.
In the following examples the highlighted text can be changed to customize the
search to meet your needs.
Example 1:
Biographies of famous Nebraskans
This example performs a search in Wilson Biographies for people that were born
in Nebraska. Looking at the URL you can see the search term Nebraska. The PL
at the end of the URL tells the system to find the word Nebraska in the Place
of Origin field.
http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?prod= WBDPIL&query=nebraska+<in>+PL
You can change this link to find people born in a different state simply by
replacing the state name. When you have a space between words like in this
example for South Dakota you need to place a plus sign (+) between the words.
http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?prod=WBDPIL&query=south+dakota+<in>+PL
Example 2: Read the latest information about the
war with Iraq in the OmniFile Full Text Select.
This example performs a search in Wilson OmniFile Full Text Select for the
terms Iraq War 2003 in the All Smart Field. Looking at the URL you can
see the search terms Iraq War 2003. The terms are connected with a plus
sign (+). As mentioned before the + takes the place of a space.
The ALL at the end of the URL tells the system to search for the terms using
the All Smart Field.
http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?prod=OMNIS&query=Iraq+War+2003+<in>+ALL
You can change this link to perform anther search simply by replacing the search terms. I would suggest you try your search first to make sure you select the best search terms to use. This URL will search for computer viruses instead of Iraq War 2003.
http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?prod=OMNIS&query=computer+viruses+<in>+ALL
Example 3: Read the latest issue of Newsweek in the OmniFile Full Text Select.
This example performs an ISSN search in the OmniFile Full Text Select. To create your own link replace the ISSN with another ISSN.
http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?prod=OMNIS&query=0028-9604<in>+ISSN
This URL will search for Time magazine.
http://vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com/hww/jumpstart.jhtml?prod=OMNIS&query=0040-781X<in>+ISSN

After a trial ends feedback on the resources will be solicited from libraries
via the TRIAL mailing list. Network Services staff will then work with vendors
to negotiate special savings for Nebraska libraries. If your library has a
resource they would like to see trialed this fall, please contact us at
Network Services.

A NEW LOOK FOR FIRSTSEARCH
On July 13, 2003, OCLC unveiled a new look for FirstSearch. The
system's updated appearance was shaped by user feedback and
usability studies. Changes to the interface are mostly cosmetic and
do not impact functionality.
Here are some highlights of the changes:
NEW FROM NEBASE: STREAMLINED ACCESS TO WORLDCAT
In order to streamline access to WorldCat, the most popular database in the
FirstSearch Base Package and host to the Nebraska Union Catalog, the Nebraska
Library Commission Network Services department has obtained a new FirstSearch
account from OCLC. This account provides access to ONLY the WorldCat database.
This new account will NOT affect the availability of WorldCat through libraries'
current FirstSearch accounts.
This WorldCat account will be available for use by all Nebraska libraries that
have registered for FirstSearch through the Library Commission. Login
information for this account was originally sent out over the TRIAL mailing
list. To have this information sent to you directly contact the Network Services
department at 800-307-2665, 402-471-3849 or e-mail Network Services.
A link to the new WorldCat account has been added to the Library Commission's
Electronic Databases web page available at </databases>.
Libraries without IP-address recognition should login using the authorization
and password referenced above.
Libraries with IP-address recognition can add the following URL to their
websites:
As always, libraries are encouraged to distribute this FirstSearch login
information to patrons to use from home.
This new WorldCat account is intended to provide libraries with an alternate way
to connect their users to the WorldCat database. Libraries interested in
promoting the use of WorldCat to their patrons should find this new account
enhances usability in several ways:
REMINDER: YEAR-ROUND DISCOUNTS ON H.W. WILSON DATABASES
AVAILABLE THROUGH THE NEBRASKA LIBRARY COMMISSION
Have you ever considered expanding your offering of H.W. Wilson databases beyond
the OmniFile Full Text Select and Biographies Plus Illustrated products provided
through the statewide database program? If so, don't forget that you are
eligible for discounted pricing if you order through the Nebraska Library
Commission!
Because the Nebraska Library Commission maintains a distributorship relationship
with the H.W. Wilson Company, Nebraska libraries are eligible to receive up to
10% off list price when ordering databases owned by H.W. Wilson, and 5% off list
price when ordering databases provided through H.W. Wilson but owned by a third
party. Libraries must place their orders with the Nebraska Library Commission in

TOOLS OF THE TRADE
While technical services staff do not need tools such as a hammer or chisel to
create catalog records, there are some cataloging tools that are essential to
doing the best job of creating a record that is useful to patrons. These tools
are based on rules that the cataloging community agree upon. Although some might
feel these rules take so long to change to reflect new technologies, medias, and
ideas that they might as well be chiseled in stone, changes are taking place. As
proof of this, several new editions of our basic cataloging tools are or will
shortly be available. Each of the new publications or services is listed below
with a brief description of the incorporated changes and/or additions.
Anglo American Cataloging Rules, 2nd edition, 2002 Revision (0-8389-3529-X)
Especially important for those libraries that contribute cataloging to a shared
database, Anglo American Cataloging Rules (AACR2) helps catalogers to
consistently describe materials to enable patrons to locate the desired item.
Published irregularly as a new edition, amendments are issued between editions
to keep rules current with changes in library collections and technology. The
last published edition was the 1998 revision.
While the first obvious change in the new edition of AACR2 is a return to the
previous loose-leaf format (in a 3-ring binder to allow for ease of updating),
there also are many changes in the content. Some of the changes are
incorporations of amendments issued in 1999 and 2001, such as the change of the
GMD from "computer file" to "electronic resource" and the rewritten chapter nine
now titled "Electronic Resources" that includes changes in the description of
electronic materials.
Of the changes new to this edition, many relate to serial publications. A
rewritten chapter 12, formerly "Serials" now titled "Continuing Resources,"
makes distinctions between "successively issued resources (i.e. serials)" and
"ongoing integrating resources (e.g. updating loose-leafs, updating Web Sites)."
These changes have in turn brought about changes in MARC coding.
Additional changes related to serials appear in Chapter 21, "Choice of Access
Points." As any serials cataloger knows, changing serials' titles is one of a
serials publisher's favorite pastimes. To help reduce the number of records that
are required by these title changes, major and minor changes have been
outlined-major changes requiring a new record and minor changes requiring only
an addition of a title access field and/or note field to the existing record.
Classification Numbers
To make it easy for patrons to find materials and to encourage browsing, most
libraries use one of two classification systems to organize materials by subject
within a discipline. The Dewey Decimal Classification system is used by most
public libraries. New editions will be available of the unabridged, abridged,
and electronic versions.
Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index, 22nd edition, 4 v., 2003
(0-910608-70-9)
Although the unabridged print edition of Dewey Decimal Classification and
Relative Index is published only every seven years or so, Library of Congress
staff continually work with the system to keep it up to date. As new events
occur, new topics/activities are developed, and as collections expand or become
more specialized, new or expanded classification numbers are required. To meet
these needs, the 22nd edition has many new built numbers and changes. A few
representative examples include:
