In cooperation with NetLibrary and Lyrasis, the Nebraska Library Commission is pleased to announce the launch of the NetLibrary Shared Collection 9!About NetLibrary eBooks: As the world's premier provider of electronic books (eBooks), NetLibrary helps academic, public, corporate, and special libraries create a richer, more productive learning environment for their patrons. By combining the time-honored traditions of librarianship with electronic publishing, NetLibrary offers an easy-to-use information and retrieval system for accessing the full text of reference, scholarly, and professional books. NetLibrary eBooks are easy to use. They are accessible from any location and searching them is fast and efficient. You can search every word in every eBook, as well as search within a particular eBook. You can browse eBooks for quick research and reference or check them out and read them at your leisure.
About the Shared Collection 9: The 9th Shared Collection opened in January 2010. Projected to include 2,500 to 3,000 titles, this collection continues the tradition of Lyrasis regional shared purchasing of front list titles and post-2000 imprints newly available in electronic format. The collection is projected to include content from leading publishers such as McGraw-Hill, Oxford University Press, AMACOM, Taylor & Francis, and university presses. Content will be available later in 2010, depending on member participation.
Features:
- MARC record sets included in price.
- No additional licensing for those who have completed eBook and Subscriber Agreements in connection with the 3rd - 8th Shared or unique collection purchases since 2003.
- Reference Center functionality will be enabled for all participants, extending to their other Reference Center holdings as well.
The following features will also be available to subscribers:
- Wide number of titles available from more than 325 publishers (see www.netlibrary.com/titleselect for complete catalog). Publishers not available for inclusion in the shared collections include ABC Clio, Columbia University Press, Gale, Harper Collins, Johns Hopkins University Press, and John Wiley. The following publishers require multiple licenses per title and will be added to the collection on a selective basis: Cambridge University Press, Taylor and Francis and their imprints, and Greenwood Press.

- Can be viewed online on any PC connected to the Internet
- Remote access available
- Real time usage reports are available from your Library Resource Center.

This is not subscription pricing. This is a one-time cost for at least five years of access to this collection. Participants will not have to pay any access fees for this collection for at least five years. At the end of five years, it is possible that an access fee will be charged for future use of the collection. See FAQs below for further information.

A Subscriber Agreement and a Library eBook Agreement (Member Terms and Conditions) are required in order to participate in the Lyrasis /NLC NetLibrary Shared Collection 9. Libraries are required to submit two signed originals of the NetLibrary license agreement ("Library eBook Agreement - Member Terms and Conditions").
If you completed these agreements when purchasing any of the previous Shared Collections (3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th), you will NOT need to submit them for Shared Collection 9.

All libraries wishing to purchase the Lyrasis/NLC NetLibrary Shared Collection 9 must submit a NetLibrary Order Form. If the library HAS NOT participated in any of the previous Shared Collections (3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th), then they must also submit the Subscriber Agreement and a Library eBook Agreement (Member Terms and Conditions).

How many titles will be in the collection?
Lyrasis estimates that the collection will close with approximately 3,000 different titles. Lyrasis collects money from libraries that want to participate in the collection and, once they have a pool of funds, they will buy the initial titles for the collection. Lyrasis will continue to add titles as more libraries join the collection. The more libraries that participate in Collection 9 the more titles the collection will have.For example, SOLINET first opened Shared Collection 3 for participation in January 2003. They bought the first 2,000+ titles that February and continued to add titles. When the collection closed on December 31, 2003, there were more than 10,000 titles.
How will eBook titles for the Shared Collection be selected?
Lyrasis staff work with NetLibrary’s collection development librarians to maintain a collection development profile that specifies acceptable publication dates, subjects, and publishers. A few of NetLibrary’s publisher partners will not sell their content to consortia.In addition, Lyrasis values input from all participants. Any participant in the Shared Collection 9 can send content suggestions and feedback to Special Projects Librarian Christa Burns. The simplest way to make your suggestions would be to use TitleSelect™, NetLibrary's collection development tool.
With TitleSelect™, you may browse NetLibrary's entire eBook catalog, while keeping a running list of those titles you'd like to recommend for the shared collection. When finished with your selection, save the listing on an excel spreadsheet and email it to Christa Burns.
What do I need to access NetLibrary?
To access NetLibrary you need Internet access. You must remain connected to the Internet while you read a book. The NetLibrary site is best viewed with one of the recommended browsers from the following list:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and above
- Firefox 2.0 and above
Depending on the operation you want to perform, certain Software will need to be installed on your system. See the NetLibrary Software Requirements for details.
What is the cost?
The Shared Collection 9 provides participants with ongoing prepaid access, rather than annual subscription access. This means that rather than paying an additional access fee annually, participants will not have to pay any access fees for the collection for at least five years. At the end of five years, NetLibrary has the option of charging an access fee for future use of the collection. A fee will be charged by NetLibrary in the event that technology changes require NetLibrary to significantly upgrade or modify its current technology. If NetLibrary does not face a significant technology upgrade, then the fee will not be assessed until necessary. This fee would be divided up among participating libraries that opt to continue their access to the titles. At this time, NetLibrary is unable to provide an approximate amount for this possible fee.How was the pricing determined for this collection?
As with other shared collections, Lyrasis worked closely with NetLibrary to forecast the amount of content in the coming year that will meet our collection development profile. Based on the amount of quality content and anticipated member participation, we set pricing that will provide members with affordable access to a large general collection of current eBooks.Why do earlier NetLibrary collections offer perpetual access with no additional fees, but the new collection only provides guaranteed five-year access with no additional fees?
After the purchase of NetLibrary by OCLC, the access options provided to all NetLibrary users replaced perpetual access with "prepaid ongoing access." For more information, please see "What is the cost" above.When will the MARC records be available?
The initial set of MARC records should be available from OCLC for downloading within a month or two of the available eBooks. After the initial batch, there will be several additional files to download as titles are added to the collection.How will I be notified when more titles or MARC records are available?
The MARC Records Contact listed on your Shared Collection order form will be automatically added to the NLC's NetLibrary distribution list. All announcements and new title lists will be sent out on this list via email. If you’d like to add additional contacts to the list, you can do so by sending an email to Jeannette Powell.How will users access the eBooks?
If your library orders and downloads the free MARC records for the collection, then users will be able to access the eBooks directly from your OPAC. Each eBook’s OCLC MARC record will contain the book’s URL in the 856 field. Users can click on the URL to be sent directly to the eBook, where they will be prompted to log in.Each user must create a NetLibrary account from an IP authenticated computer at your institution. To do this, users will go to www.netlibrary.com and click on the "Create a Free Account" link in the upper-right hand corner of the screen. Creating an account requires each user to provide his or her name and email address as well as creating a user name and password for future access. Libraries without IP addresses will have an alternative method of access set up by NLC.
If your library does not have the MARC records loaded, users can go to www.netlibrary.com and log in. Once logged in, they can complete a search to access all eBooks owned by your library.
Will the NetLibrary page have my institution name branded on it?
Yes, when your users log in to access an eBook, the top of the page will indicate that it is your library’s eBook collection (i.e. "Hruska Memorial Library eBook Collection").Can I change policy settings, such as checkout period, for my library?
No, all policy settings, including the four-hour checkout period, apply to the entire shared collection and its participants.If a user from another participating library has an eBook checked out, will my patron be able to use the same eBook?
No. Just like with print books, eBooks can only be viewed/checked out by one person at a time. Multiple copies of eBooks will be added to the collection when justified by usage or required by the publisher. This should help eliminate the number of turnaways users will experience. Because the checkout period is set at four hours, and statistics show us that users get what they want and get out rather than browsing the eBooks, we have not experienced a high number of turnaways.Does the shared collection provide remote access?
Yes, but with a caveat. In order to access NetLibrary remotely, users must first come into the library to create a personal NetLibrary account from an authenticated computer. Once the user creates his or her account from an authenticated computer, he or she will be affiliated with your library and can use the account username/password to access NetLibrary from any computer with Internet access.Can users print from the eBooks?
Yes, users can print one page at a time. To print several sequential pages, users must print the current page, turn the page (with the “next” arrow), print the new page, and so forth.Where can I find training materials?
